The data science and analytics graduate program is pleased to announce the next talk in its fall 2022 Seminar Series, “Better First Dashboard,” presented by Ray Givler, senior decision support consultant at Highmark, on Monday, September 26, from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. via Zoom. All are invited to attend.

  • Would you recognize a poorly designed dashboard?
  • See examples of bad practices in data vis and tips to correct them.

Volunteer Opportunity with WNY PRISM: August 20, September 10

Please join the Great Lakes Center and WNY PRISM (Partnership for Regional Invasive Species Management) at one of our volunteer removal days. If you love recreating in the Buffalo area, help us protect it by attending one of our volunteer days this summer. We will be removing the early detection priority invasive species Japanese stiltgrass from various locations. We will provide snacks, water, and gloves, but feel free to bring your own. Please wear long pants and closed-toe shoes and bring your own water bottle. This is a great way for students or student organizations to get volunteer hours and help with this community science effort. Please register online and join us on one of the following dates:

Great Lakes Center Open House: September 16

The annual Great Lakes Center Open House will be held Friday, September 16, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the GLC's Dick Smith Teaching Pavilion, located at the foot of Porter Avenue on the Niagara River. We will present the 2021–2022 Annual Report, updates on the Great Lakes environmental science graduate program, and current and future projects. Faculty, staff, and students are welcome. Turnitin Upgrade: Instructor Actions Required for Fall 2022 Courses

Buffalo State's Turnitin integration with Blackboard Learn has been upgraded from Direct v2.5 to LTI 1.3 (Turnitin Feedback Studio Assignments). Buffalo State's previous version of Turnitin (Direct v2.5) is no longer supported. Any existing Turnitin assignments will continue to work through the summer term.

After 5:00 p.m. Monday, August 29, any existing Turnitin Direct v2.5 assignments must be recreated.

If you have used Turnitin within your Blackboard Learn courses, please be aware of the following timeline and action items:

Before Fall 2022 Semester

  • Existing Turnitin Direct v2.5 assignments will continue to work for students and instructors.
  • Instructors should copy any assignment instructions or descriptions added to Turnitin Direct v2.5 assignments and save these in a Word document on their computer or in their OneDrive.
  • Instructors must use an updated process to create new Turnitin Feedback Studio assignments within courses.
  • Any Turnitin Rubrics and QuickMarks will still be accessible.

After 5:00 p.m. August 29

Bengals Dare to Care Day: Information for Groups and Courses

Bengals Dare to Care Day?is Saturday, October 1, from 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Please join President Katherine Conway-Turner for this important Buffalo State College day of service. Bengals Dare to Care Day is a wonderful experience for courses, athletic teams, and other groups to bond while serving the community. 

If you would like your group to work together on a service project, please contact the CCE by Saturday, September 10, to be pre-assigned to a project.

To best coordinate group efforts, we ask that a faculty or staff member related to the group participate in Bengals Dare to Care Day alongside their group in a site coordinator capacity. Site coordinators keep track of volunteers, facilitate a short reflection discussion, and act as the point of contact with the community partner during the morning of service. Training is provided. Site coordinators are required to check in at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 1.  

Everyone in the group must be registered in advance. You can register your group on your own or contact the contact the CCE to register your group.

The BDTC Guide for Courses?(PDF, 359 KB) will help faculty and staff members prepare their students to participate and reflect on the day in relation to course content and general civic learning.

Ensemble Video Migration to YuJa: August 11-12

Buffalo State College’s current Ensemble Video content will be exported to the new YuJa video platform on Thursday, August 11, and Friday, August 12. Please do not plan to have access to Ensemble during this time for adding, viewing, editing, or deleting content.

This is only the first step in the transition process; more information about how to access the new service and training options will be forthcoming. If you would like to learn more in the meantime, please see YuJa’s Lecture Capture and Video Management support page or view the short informational videos on its YouTube channel.

What you can do to prepare:

Thank you for your patience during this process. We are confident that you will find YuJa to be a much more robust and useful video solution moving forward. More to come!
