Conversation on Mental Health and Wellness Activities on Campus

Posted:

Would you like to be part of a conversation about rebuilding groups and programs around mental health and wellness on campus? Sign up to participate in an online Teams meeting to discuss several possible initiatives. Please complete this poll to provide your preferred days and times to meet in early August. Open to all faculty, staff, and students, the poll will close Thursday, August 4. Participants will be sent the final date and time along with the Teams link.

Active Minds was founded by Alison Malmon when she was a junior at the University of Pennsylvania following the suicide of her older brother and only sibling, Brian. Alison recognized that Brian’s story is the story of thousands of young people who suffer in silence, young people who, despite their large numbers, think they are totally alone. A majority of mental illnesses start between the ages of 14 and 24, when teens and young adults are in school. Suicide is the second leading cause of death for college students.

Send Silence Packing is part of Active Minds and was once here at Buffalo State (in 2013). While this requires funding, we can discuss possible grants and collaboration opportunities.

Fresh Check Day, the signature program of the Jordan Porco Foundation, is an uplifting mental health promotion and suicide prevention event for colleges that includes interactive expo booths, peer-to-peer messaging, support of multiple campus departments and groups, free food, entertainment, and exciting prizes and giveaways. Fresh Check Day aims to create an approachable and hopeful atmosphere where students are encouraged to engage in dialogue about mental health and to build a bridge between students and the mental health resources available on campus, in the community, and nationally.

We will also discuss current campus programs and resources available to students.

If you are unable to attend but would still like to participate in future conversations or share your thoughts, resources, or suggestions, please email Paula Madrigal, assistant director of prevention and health promotion for the Weigel Wellness Center. Thank you.

Stroke across America: August 13

Posted:

The Speech-Language Pathology Department’s Stroke and Hope Aphasia Support Group is a proud ally of Stroke across America, a national community bike ride to raise awareness for the support and prevention of stroke. The Buffalo community event will take place Saturday, August 13, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. in the Larkin Square Boardwalk area, 745 Seneca Street.

More than 800,000 people in the United States—13.7 million worldwide—experience a stroke each year. Only 38 percent of people know the warning signs of stroke; Western New York has one of the highest mortality rates for stroke in New York State. Aphasia, a communication disorder that affects about a third of people who have a stroke, impairs a person’s ability to process language. It affects over 2 million people in the U.S., putting it on a par with multiple sclerosis.

Please help raise awareness of these two debilitating illnesses by supporting the Stroke across America community event in Buffalo. Contact Deborah Insalaco, associate professor of speech-language pathology, for more information.
