INNOVATE: Planetarium Collaboration - Brainstorming Session June 29

Posted:

Now that the Whitworth Ferguson Planetarium is in full operation, its state-of-the-art projection systems and 360-degree immersive environment afford opportunities for collaborations with faculty, staff, and students from across campus beyond the planetarium's traditional use for astronomy education. We are therefore restarting the "Incorporating New and Novel Opportunities in Visualizations, Arts, Technology, and Education" (INNOVATE) in the Planetarium project, where ideas from across disciplines will be discussed and worked on to take advantage of this new, amazing facility on campus.

We will hold an open brainstorming session and introduction to the planetarium on Wednesday, June 29, from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m.

If you can attend, please fill out this short form. If you cannot attend but are interested, please email Kevin Williams, planetarium director and associate professor of earth sciences.

We will be running another session in the fall semester.

Tell Students: Bengal Stripes Leadership Program

Posted:

The Bengal Stripes Leadership Program seeks to prepare students for college and develop the essential skills necessary to be personally, professionally, and academically successful at Buffalo State College and beyond. This is accomplished through education, development, and training of students in a series of workshops, personal development programs, civic engagement, and active engagement with the college and community.

The program is free and open to all Buffalo State students to sign up.

Students can enter the program at any time and complete the program at their own pace. Progress will carry over each semester until a student either completes the program or graduates. A goal of this program is to be flexible and accommodate our students’ schedules.

Bengal Stripes Leadership Program Requirements
The program consists of five workshops based on the Leadership Challenge’s Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership. A sixth workshop will give students the opportunity to complete the DISC Profile Assessment and better understand themselves and those they interact with—and then use this knowledge to reduce conflict and improve working relationships.

Students are welcome to take the workshops in any order at any time that fits their schedule. Progress will be tracked through Bengal Connect and the Bengal Stripes Leadership Program Path.

A certificate of recognition in student leadership will be awarded when the student has completed the program requirements. To earn the certificate of recognition in student leadership, students will be required to complete the following workshops, campus experiences, and assignments:

Required Workshops

  • Model the Way
  • Inspire a Shared Vision
  • Challenge the Process
  • Enable Others to Act
  • Encourage the Heart
  • DISC Assessment

Campus Experiences

  • Attend two campus programs focused on professional development
  • Attend two campus programs focused on social justice
  • Attend two campus programs focused on civic engagement
  • Attend two campus programs focused on Bengal pride or campus life

Interview with a Leader
Students will also be asked to select a community or college leader to interview and write a two-page reflection on the experience. This person should be someone who is respected and viewed as an effective and exemplary leader in an organization.

Please contact Luke Haumesser, associate director of student leadership and engagement, or call Student Leadership and Engagement at (716) 878-4631 with questions.
