Lyubov Burlakova, senior research scientist, and Alexander Karatayev, director of the Great Lakes Center, were interviewed for an article in the Swiss newspaper, Tages-Anzeiger. Published December 11, 2024, the article discusses the work Burlakova and Karatayev are currently pursuing at the Eawag Water Research Institute (EWRI) in Dübendorf, Switzerland. Faced with an invasion of quagga mussels in Switzerland's Lake Zurich, EWRI has invited Burlakova and Karatayev to share their expertise on this invasive mussel.

Brian Haas, field and lab research technician at the Great Lakes Center, was interviewed for a recently published article in Fondriest Environmental's Environmental Monitor. The article describes the buoy that the Great Lakes Center operates and maintains off the coast of Dunkirk, New York, through funding from the Great Lakes Observing System. As the supplier of the Dunkirk buoy, Fondriest Environmental is a leading distributor and integrator of various types of field equipment worldwide, and this article shines an international light on the Great Lakes Center and the important work of its scientists.

Jinseok Heo, chair and associate professor of chemistry, recently published a research article as the corresponding author in Langmuir, a journal published by the American Chemical Society. The article, titled "Quick Freezing-Induced Au Nanoparticle Aggregates (QFIAAs) for Near-IR (NIR) Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) Substrates," features contributions from three Buffalo State chemistry students; M. Scott Goodman, associate vice president of academic affairs; and Igor Lednev from the University at Albany.

Brian Kantz, creative services director in the Marketing and Communications Office, and Leasa Rochester-Mills, director of the Academic Standards Office, were recognized by the Professional Staff Caucus (PSC) kudos program for the month of January. The program recognizes the value of seeing the good and saying it. All Buffalo State community members are encouraged to use the new PSC ShareBox to give someone the gift of a brighter day. Kudos collected are posted each month on the PSC website. January 2025: Brian Kantz - Brian is a true unsung hero! He is unflappable and always takes on design work with a smile, no matter how impossible the deadline may seem.  The speed and accuracy of his work and the work of his team is second to none. Buffalo State would be lost without him! Thanks Brian and know you are appreciated! Leasa Rochester-Mills - Leasa went above and beyond to help me help a student. The buck stops in Academic Standards and Leasa reached out to multiple offices and people to ensure the student would have a great outcome, even when the issue couldn't be solved with her.
