More Notes from the Chile PDS

Posted:

The Elementary Education and Reading Department's Professional Development Schools Consortium has two groups studying abroad this summer, one in Santiago, Chile, and one in Lusaka, Zambia. Pixita Del Prado Hill, associate professor, is leading the group in Chile. We hope you've had a chance to visit their websites and to look in on the students' experiences, but here are some current excerpts from the blogs:

"Today was by far one of the best experiences I’ve had on this trip. The Buffalo State crew was inaugurated into the Benjamin Vicuña Mackenna family. It was a very big event! We were greeted with a wonderful ceremony from the students and staff. In honor of English Week, the students showcased their presentation entirely in English, which is pretty amazing. I could tell they worked so hard to perfect it for us. (Don’t worry there will be pictures to follow.) Shortly after the inauguration I met with my cooperating teacher, who was the school librarian. I thought it would be interesting to learn about the library and the importance of it at Escuela 25. Yo aprendro mucho!…I learned a lot. I even put some books in the computer system… I’m a bit of a nerd. And finally it was time to explain my activity with my first class EVER AT ESCUELA 25. As nervous as a preschooler, I did a simple read aloud to a fifth grade class and the girls were amazing. They helped me with my Spanish (which needs much practice) and I read to them in English. The librarian was nice enough to dedicate a space in the library to give me a bulletin board to display my activities." - Jaquilla Vinson

"Today was our first day at Benjamin Vicuña Mackenna, which is an all girls public school. We will be working at the school every day Monday-Thursday. We got to school this morning and had an amazing welcoming ceremony to kick off English week. The students sang different songs to us (in English) about brushing their teeth (super cute, pictures to follow), and another song from the Beatles – Hello Goodbye, it was so touching. Touching isnt even the right word, but I cant think of the right one right now. It was amazing and made us feel so welcome, it was truly heart warming." - Courtney Hammond

"The classroom environment is very laid back, and the students get a lot of free time (every 90 minutes). I am with an English teacher who is very nice! I helped her write down song lyrics that help her students learn English. I think that the United States education system and the Chilean education system should combine to make an ideal school setting where the teachers and teach the best and the students can learn in the best way. For example, we should give our students more breaks during the day and make the school day a little bit longer, and also enforce effective classroom management techniques." - Casey Orth

Chase Hall Windows to Be Replaced Beginning Monday

Posted:

As was announced in late May, the windows on Chase Hall will be replaced as part of Buffalo State’s ongoing efforts to address critical maintenance needs. Work is scheduled to begin Monday, June 25, where office windows will be replaced.

As part of this project, asbestos-containing caulk will be removed and abated from window openings. Work will be conducted by a contractor and monitored by an independent consultant to ensure that abatement operations are performed in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations. Windows and caulk will be removed and replaced from the exterior after the window openings have been enclosed in plastic from the interior. Plastic will remain on each window for about three days.

Workers will need to enter Chase Hall interior spaces to make preparations. We appreciate the assistance and cooperation of Chase Hall occupants in providing workers with the necessary access. In addition, we ask building occupants to please move objects away from windows and clear off window sills. Minor disruptions during the project may include noise, vibrations, and dust.

Please refer to www.buffalostate.edu/construction for further information about current and upcoming construction on campus. Questions about this project can be directed to vpfm@buffalostate.edu. Your patience and understanding are greatly appreciated.

Notes from the Chile PDS

The Elementary Education and Reading Department's Professional Development Schools Consortium has two groups currently studying abroad. Pixita Del Prado Hill, associate professor, is leading a group in Santiago, Chile. Here are some excerpts from the students' blogs:

"Learning a new language is not easy, but it so absolutely amazing how much you can pick up when you are fully immersed in the culture. We have survived every day, and in order to do that, we have to use the language in different ways (ordering lunch, post office, grocery store, etc.) every day. Because it is necessary to use the language every day, it feels like every day is sink or swim time, and I for one refuse to sink. I am practicing, practicing, and practicing some more. I am so thankful for the staff at EF, our friends at U Mayor, my host mom, and the friendly people (seriously, so nice) for allowing me to feel comfortable in a foreign country and practice my Spanish without laughing at me or judging me (at least not to my face). :) " - Courtney Hammond

"Today we went to the Museo de la Memoria y los Derechos Humanos. The museum of memory and human rights, it described in great detail the torture and pain the Chilean citizens dealt with during the 17-year dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet. This was very upsetting and eye opening for me because I had never heard of this before. I was able to learn a lot from this museum even though it was very sad." - Nicole Clapsadle

"Global Book Hour today was pretty interesting! We started off by playing hot potato, and the girls loved it! It was a little crazy though. The teacher candidates cannot take a management class until next semester, so it was hard to keep the class on task. I’m excited to see how next week will be when I’m in the classroom all day with a teacher. I’ll be teaching English to Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd graders. Can’t wait!" - Casey Orth
