Governor Spitzer to Speak on Campus on Wednesday, January 16

Posted:

Gov. Eliot Spitzer has chosen Buffalo State College as the venue for the “State of Upstate” address, to be held on Wednesday, January 16, at 10:00 a.m. in the Performing Arts Center at Rockwell Hall. This historic event, an upstate version of the traditional “State of the State” address, is being heralded as a first for a New York governor. Faculty and staff are invited to attend.

We expect hundreds of guests, numerous media outlets, and enhanced security personnel to be on campus that morning. We ask all faculty and staff to consider parking on the west side of campus (lots F, F-1, G, L, L-1, R, S-1, and S-2) on Wednesday from 8:00 a.m. to noon. We would like as many spaces as possible to be available for guests on the east end of Rockwell Road (lot A) and in the lots near Rockwell Hall (lots T, U, W, X, and Y). Please see the campus parking map (PDF, 1MB) for more information.

We are honored to host this significant event. Please help us welcome Governor Spitzer and his guests to Buffalo State College. We thank you in advance for your cooperation and help in making this event a success.

The Provost’s Office is sponsoring training during the Intersemester break for development of online courses.

Two one-day training sessions will be offered on January 14 and January 21 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in CyberQuad 318 (lunch provided). They will be extended presentations about how one plans and prepares an online course. Sessions are open to all faculty members, but each session is limited to 22 people. Please register early by clicking on this link http://bscintra.buffalostate.edu/registration/default.asp?cat=21&month=01&year=2010

An incentive is being offered to faculty interested in developing a general education course into an online format. To receive the incentive you must attend one of the January sessions and engage in further training during the spring semester in order to finalize the course. There is funding on a first-come, first-serve basis for the creation of 10 general education courses. People will receive $500 for the creation of the course and an additional $500 if they teach the course during summer 2010. After registering for the course, send a note to Carolyn Martino indicating interest in the incentive.

From the Chair of the Presidential Search Committee

Posted:

Dear Buffalo State College Community:

I wanted to write and update you briefly and very generally on the progress of our presidential search. Your committee has been working hard and is making excellent progress in my opinion.

The fairly recent visit by our search consultant and the very solid participation and feedback she received during her trip, combined with our advertisements in a broad array of academic journals, our institutional profile, and our excellent reputation have all served us well. We are attracting strong interest among highly qualified candidates for the Buffalo State president’s position.

As you may recall, all of the search committee members signed confidentiality agreements so I can’t discuss detail regarding our candidates. However, we believe we are on track with our goal of presenting a few highly qualified candidates to campus after winter break. More details will follow as we confirm those dates.

I want to thank you for respecting the importance of confidentiality to a successful recruiting process and thank you for understanding why our committee members must be so tight-lipped. We will lose our prospective candidates quickly and potentially compromise their status at their home institution if we cannot assure their confidentiality.

I want to say how much the entire College Council appreciates the excellent job that Interim President Ponton and the entire team is doing at Buffalo State to keep moving forward in the very positive trajectory that we have become accustomed to and proud of.

I want to publicly thank the many members of our search committee who continue to be a pleasure to work with. Their active attendance, preparedness, participation, and open-mindedness are an excellent reflection of our college, and is a primary reason I have such confidence of a successful outcome to our search.

Sincerely,
Howard A. Zemsky
Search Committee Chair
Vice Chair, Buffalo State College Council

Lot L Closing Postponed; Lot M Expansion Ahead of Schedule

Posted:

The closure of Lot L has been has postponed until Wednesday, November 25, when the expansion of Lot M will be complete. The expansion project is nearly two weeks ahead of schedule.

Waiting to close Lot L until the 411-space expansion of Lot M is finished should ease the pressure on student, faculty, and staff parking that would have otherwise occurred.

Construction of the college’s new $48 million student housing project—to be located on Lot L—is now scheduled to begin Friday, November 27.

Questions about this project can be e-mailed to VPFM@buffalostate.edu.

Reminder to Carpool: Lot L to Close Permanently Tomorrow, November 14

Posted:

After months of planning and preparation, construction is about to get under way on Buffalo State’s new student housing project. This new 507-bed apartment-style dormitory, to be located on Lot L, is scheduled for a spring 2011 completion. It will meet our increasing need for on-campus housing at Buffalo State.

To accommodate construction-site preparation, Lot L will be permanently removed from service tomorrow, Saturday, November 14. The recent addition of 159 parking spaces in Lot R and the soon-to-be-completed 411-space expansion of Lot M will more than make up for the loss of 433 spaces in Lot L.

Stanley Kardonsky, vice president for finance and management, is asking everyone on campus to be patient in the coming weeks as students, faculty, and staff adjust to the new parking configuration.

“The removal of Lot L from service will undoubtedly require some adjustment on the part of our students, faculty, and staff,” said Kardonsky. “Once the expansion of Lot M is complete, which should be within a few weeks, there will be ample parking available on campus. However, during the brief transition period before Lot M expansion is finished, we encourage everyone to arrive to campus early and consider carpooling or use of public transportation, as parking spaces, especially in student lots, will be at a premium.”

For more information about student housing construction, Lot M expansion, or the new planned shuttle service connecting Lots M, G, and C, please read this Bulletin article or send your questions to VPFM@buffalostate.edu.
