Fall Fulbright Seminar: 'The Responsibility of Global Scholarship' - October 19

Any student, faculty, or staff member interested in the multiple possibilities offered by the Fulbright Program is welcome to attend the Western New York and Northwestern Pennsylvania Chapter of the Fulbright Association’s fall conference, “The Responsibility of Global Scholarship,” on Friday, October 19, from noon to 3:00 p.m. in Bisgrove Hall on the campus of Niagara University. The event includes lunch and is free and open to the public.

The guest speaker will be Anna McNab, associate professor of management at Niagara University.

Making Accessible Content: Word and PDF

Buffalo State is engaging in an effort to promote accessibility of materials on the web and within all courses. This hands-on session will focus on how to use Microsoft Office Word effectively to create accessible Word files that can be converted to accessible PDFs along with converting scanned image PDF files to accessible formats. Please have access to a Word and PDF document either in OneDrive or on a flash drive that can be used during this session.

SkillShops are 30- to 50-minute drop-in workshops covering a range of topics related to student success. These workshops focus on developing skills related to finding and using information, college readiness, writing, and technology. SkillShops are held in Butler Library 314, unless otherwise noted.

Assistive Technology Resources and Training

The availability of assistive technology and its use on campus by students, faculty, and staff members are on the rise. This training workshop will provide hands-on experience for attendees to learn to use Texthelp Read&Write and the accessibility features available within the Windows and Mac operating systems. The JAWS screen reader program and Dragon Naturally Speaking speech recognition programs will be demonstrated to increase the understanding of the functions and how users interact with these tools. Attendees will have an increased knowledge of technical needs to work with all the software.

Professional Development Workshop: 'Crucial Confrontations: Developing the Skills to Effectively Manage Conflict' - October 12

Please join us for the professional development workshop "Crucial Confrontations: Developing the Skills to Effectively Manage Conflict," presented by Rita Zientek, associate dean of the School of the Professions, on Friday, October 12, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in Chase Hall 109.

This workshop will cover the following:

  • The definition of a crucial confrontation and how it differs from a crucial conversation
  • How to decide whether to have a crucial confrontation
  • Diagnosing the issue: is it context, pattern, or relationship?
  • Determining if the cause is related to ability or motivation
  • What to do before, during, and after a crucial confrontation
  • Creating a plan for dealing with a necessary personal confrontation

A shorter version of this workshop was offered last spring. Please feel free to attend this workshop even if you attended the previous one. We will review some concepts we covered but will also spend more time on skill development and application for individual situations. 

Breakfast will be provided, sponsored by the Buffalo State Chapter of United University Professions. Please register through the Workshop Registration System.
