PSM Fall Speaker Series: 'Analytics Using Free Public Data' - October 18

Posted:

Please join us for the Professional Science Master’s (PSM) Fall Speaker Series lecture "Analytics Using Free Public Data," presented by Drew Fones, managing director of consulting for rel8ed.to Analytics, on Thursday, October 18, from 12:15 to 1:30 p.m. in Technology Building 160.

Mr. Fones is a dynamic, enthusiastic speaker and an accomplished analytics leader with 20-plus years of global experience translating opportunities directly to business results. He will share real-world examples of business lead generation, obtained from public data. Rel8ed.to recently added a location at the downtown Buffalo Innovation Center.

At this session, we will learn how

  • data from hundreds of open sources is aggregated and compiled;
  • overlaying of customer data provides a basis for analysis;
  • creation of models for both cross-sell and external leads is done;
  • visualization of the results provides executives with specific strategies.

Note: Rel8ed.to Analytics is a member of the PSM Advisory Board and host to Buffalo State interns. Check the Career Development Center (CDC) website for open positions.

Chemistry-Physics Departmental Seminar Series: 'Cholesterol Metabolism and Multiple Sclerosis Disease Progression' - October 4

Posted:

Please join the Chemistry and Physics departments for the seminar "Cholesterol Metabolism and Multiple Sclerosis Disease Progression," presented by Murali Ramanathan, professor of pharmaceutical sciences and neurology, and director of the laboratory for multiple sclerosis neuroscience at the University at Buffalo, on Thursday, October 4, from 12:15 to 1:30 p.m. in Science and Mathematics Complex 173.

Abstract
Despite the availability of immunomodulatory disease-modifying therapies, disease progression remains a significant problem in multiple sclerosis (MS), an inflammatory, demyelinating, and neurodegenerative disorder of the central nervous system. The available treatments reduce the frequency of relapses but do not halt the neurodegenerative processes that cause brain atrophy and disability progression.

Metabolic pathways generate the energy and provide the building blocks for the cell and are critically important for immune responses and neuronal functions in the central nervous system (CNS). There is considerable evidence indicating a pleiotropic role for cholesterol metabolism in CNS homeostasis, immune responses, and neurodegenerative processes. Indeed, the brain represents about 2 percent of body weight but accounts for about 25 percent of the body’s cholesterol. Approximately 70 percent of brain cholesterol is in myelin, which is damaged in MS. The implications of the cholesterol pathways for MS have not been systematically investigated. In this talk, I will summarize our clinical research on the role of cholesterol biomarkers and metabolites in the MS disease process.

Final Day to Enroll: 2019 NYS Flex Spending Account

Posted:

Open enrollment for the 2019 NYS Flex Spending Account (FSA) ends today at midnight. No enrollments will be processed after that time. The account offers two benefits: the Health Care Spending Account (HCSAccount) and the Dependent Care Advantage Account (DCAAccount).

The HCSAccount allows employees to set aside between $100 and $2,650 annually in pretax salary to pay for health-care expenses not reimbursed by health insurance.

The DCAAccount allows employees to set aside up to $5,000 annually in pretax salary for eligible child care, elder care, or disabled dependent care expenses. The DCAAccount employer contribution will be available to M/C employees and those represented by CSEA, PEF, UUP, NYSCOPBA, Council82, PBANYS, and GSEU for the 2019 plan year.

Employees who do not work for 26 pay periods should consider electing a shorter time frame for their deductions so they do not lose coverage while off the payroll. For example, faculty members who are not paid through the summer should elect to have all deductions taken in the spring semester in order to have coverage for all of 2019.

Participants currently enrolled in the HCSAccount or DCAAccount must re-enroll to continue benefits in 2019.

Paperless enrollment is quick, easy, and secure. For program details or to enroll in the FSA, visit the FSA website or call the FSA hotline at (800) 358-7202.

Tonight's deadline for 2019 enrollment will be strictly enforced.
