Faculty and Staff Appeal 2011

Posted:

Maria Garrity, ’86, a systems programmer and departmental coordinator for Computing and Technology Services, remembers the days when she dropped her son off at daycare. “That’s why I support the Child Care Center through the Faculty and Staff Appeal,” she said. “That’s where kids begin, and the kids and their moms need the assistance.”

In the fall, her son will start college. “As a single mom who works full time,” said Maria, “I know firsthand how difficult it is to makes ends meet. In these economic times, it is a struggle for our youth. I can empathize with their many hardships by my own life experiences.” Maria gives to the Ron Brown ITEC Scholarship Fund, and the Alumni Fund.

Maria chooses to support funds that are close to her heart, but there is another reason for her generosity. “If it wasn’t for the students,” she said, “we wouldn’t be here. They are doing their part and working hard. It’s up to us to help them out.”

Join Maria. Support our students and choose a fund for your gift. For additional information about giving to the Faculty and Staff Appeal, please contact Louis Noce.

QPR, Suicide Prevention Workshop

Posted:

The Counseling Center needs your help. We continually seek innovative approaches to reaching students and know this cannot be done without faculty and staff support. Our goal is to increase awareness and support around suicide prevention. But we cannot do this alone. The Counseling Center understands we only reach a small percentage of students who struggle with emotional and mental issues. Students may not always have the inner resources to know how to get help.

The sad truth is that each year approximately 83 New York State college students die by suicide. This has a large impact on a campus community. Therefore we have a call to action.

We are trying to reach out to as many students as possible through our QPR suicide prevention program. We would like to partner with faculty to encourage students to attend this two-hour training. Faculty could offer students an incentive for their attendance. We would provide each professor with the names of the students who attended.

Counseling Center is offering this QPR training on several dates throughout the remaining spring semester.

Thursday, March 10, 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. in E. H. Butler Library
Tuesday, March 22, noon to 2:00 p.m. in the Counseling Center, Weigel Health Center 203
