Faculty Presentation: Diversity through Service Learning

Posted:

Over the past five years, CASTL fellow Gary Welborn, associate professor of Sociology and faculty coordinator for service-learning at Buffalo State, has been exploring the relationship between service-learning and diversity. During that time, he has also employed service-learning in his own teaching. This has provided an opportunity to closely observe the impact that service-learning has on student attitudes about diversity and social justice. “I have seen the transformative potential that a quality service-learning experience can have on a student’s awareness of and sensitivity toward social justice issues. Many students are terribly apprehensive when they are first asked to go into the community, but by the end of the experience they are talking about how differently they see the world.”
