Because electricity costs have exceeded $100/ per megawatt hour across New York State and prices are expected to continue to rise, SUNY is encouraging each campus to do its part in reducing consumption. Please be mindful of your use of air conditioners and other electrical devices, and turn off anything that is not necessary.

College and Community Partnerships Office Announces Minigrant Awards

The 2008 Partnership Minigrants have been awarded to five Buffalo State faculty members by the College and Community Partnerships Office. The minigrant initiative is designed to offer unique opportunities for tenured and tenure-track faculty to address a particular situation/problem/issue in partnership with the community. This year the individual awards ranged from $800 to $2,070. The five minigrant awardees and their community partners are:

New Outdoor Recycling Bins-Check These Out!

EVERGREEN, Buffalo State College's environmental organization, has spread its green influences across campus with the recent addition of outdoor recycling bins. Twenty bins were placed around the Campbell Student Union, Moot Hall, and Cleveland Hall. They have two doors—one green (for plastic, glass, and metal) and one brown (for trash).

Update on Cleveland Hall Exterior Work

The removal and replacement of asbestos-containing caulk from the exterior of Cleveland Hall is nearing completion, and masonry restoration is well under way. As part of that work, the deteriorating brick/concrete benches near the building’s south entrance will be demolished and rebuilt, and brick panels on the south and west facades of the building will be removed and replaced.

Join the Buffalo State College Team at Brush Up Buffalo 2008

We’re looking for a few volunteers—students, faculty, and staff—to be part of a Buffalo State paint team at Brush Up Buffalo 2008 on Saturday, June 14. Brush Up Buffalo is a one-day, all-volunteer event where more than 500 volunteers gather to repaint more than a dozen homes for low-income homeowners in a Buffalo neighborhood.

Benefit/Fundraiser for Joe Nanna, Professor, Writing Program

Professor Nanna is in need of a liver transplant as a result of Hemachromatosis (iron overload). He has been suffering with end stage liver disease for five years and now needs your help. Please join friends and family of professor Joe Nanna on Sunday, June 8, from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the George F. Lamm Post and Manor, 962 Wherle Drive in Cheektowaga, for a benefit/fund raiser. Tickets are $20 and include food, drinks, and fun! There will be a basket raffle, silent auction, and a 50/50 split. Call Nicole at 566-8578 or Nancy at 839-5485 to purchase pre-sale tickets. Lecture on Anna Katherine Green, Mother of the Detective Novel, Today

The life and works of Anna Katherine Green (1846-1935), a Buffalo mystery novelist and considered to be the “Mother of the Detective Novel,” will be the topic of a lecture and PowerPoint event sponsored by Dr. Joan Wirthling Roberts, English faculty emeriti, and the Monroe Fordham Regional History Center. All are invited to the presentation, which will be held today, June 4, at 4:00 p.m. in E. H. Butler Library 210. Light Refreshments will be served.
