New Courses:
AAS 300 Black Thought. Prepares students to engage with conceptual frameworks within Africana studies. Focuses on works from thinkers from Africa and the African diaspora to understand the varied ways African people globally have made sense of and tried to change the world, before and since the holocaust of enslavement. Offered fall semester.

AAS 357 Blacks in Technology. Equips students with technical competency in groundbreaking technology and critical understanding of tech segregation that disproportionately affects Black people. Offered fall semester.

Course Revisions with General Education 2023 Designations:
DIVERSITY: EQUITY, INCLUSION, AND SOCIAL JUSTICE
AAS 100 Introduction to Africana Studies. Origins of Africana studies in the social movements of the 1960s. Africans as humanity's first people and creators of complex civilizations. Exposing white supremacy and anti-Blackness as philosophical pillars of the modern world. Critical review of traditional majors and professions through the lens of Africana studies. Offered every semester.  

WORLD HISTORY AND GLOBAL AWARENESS
AAS 305/ANT 305 Mother Africa (formerly AAS 305/ANT 305 Peoples of Africa). Survey of Africa's contributions to the human genome, world history, and advanced civilizations, from ancient Nile Valley civilizations to current political formations. Understands Blacks in the diaspora as part of Africa's legacy to the making of the modern world. Emphasizes African people's values, perspectives, and calls for Black liberation. Offered every other spring semester.

Course Revision: 
HON 209 Global Awareness Seminar (formerly HON 209 Western Civilizations Seminar). Prerequisite: Admission to the Honors Program. Study of the origin, evolution, and development of Western civilizations. Course may focus on one or multiple Western civilizations of the instructor's choice and focus on a period in time, such as Greco-Roman, Judeo-Christian movements, Renaissance, Reformation, the Enlightenment, the Industrial Revolution, the Scientific Revolution, or the development of liberal democracy. Topics of focus include the rise and spread of various empires in terms of influence, achievements, and lasting impact from socioeconomic, political, and global perspectives in the chosen Western civilization and period in time. Offered every semester.

From the Chair of the College Senate Curriculum Committee
Because of delays in the development and implementation of the CourseLeaf Curriculum Inventory Management (CIM), the College Senate Curriculum Committee is using an in-house system for review of curricular proposals for the fall semester. The form and templates can be found on the College Senate Curriculum Committee website. Any questions regarding the in-house system, program proposals, or course proposals may be directed to Dianne McCarthy, Curriculum Committee chair, or Kristen Mruk, special assistant to the provost and senate.

The last day for submission of proposals for fall 2023 review is Wednesday, November 15.
