Tell Students: National Coming Out Day Events Today

Posted:

The Buffalo State community will host a full day of events to celebrate National Coming Out Day today, October 11, in the Campbell Student Union. We will be accepting donations throughout the day for an LGBTQ+ resource library being established on campus. If you would like to donate but cannot attend the events, please contact Sean P. Terry, student activities assistant for evening and weekend life, to arrange a drop-off or pickup.

National Coming Out Day celebrates coming out as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or queer (LGBTQ) or as an LGBTQ ally. This year marks the 29th anniversary of the National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights, the first observed National Coming Out Day.

One out of every two Americans has someone close to them who is gay or lesbian. For transgender people, that number is only one in 10. Coming out, whether it is as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, or allied, still matters. When people know someone who is LGBTQ, they are far more likely to support equality under the law.

  • Resources Tabling
    11:00 a.m.–2:00 p.m.
    Campbell Student Union Lobby
Campus offices along with Planned Parenthood, the Pride Center of Western New York, Evergreen Health Services, and the Mocha Center will staff tables offering resources and treats to the campus community. Stop by to receive an "I Am Buffalo State" pride button to show your support for our LGBTQ+ community members.
  • Bengal Ally Mixer
    5:00–6:30 p.m.
    Campbell Student Union Fireside Lounge
Take some time at the end of the day to connect with students and other faculty and staff members in a calm and welcoming environment. Light refreshments will be served.
  • Big Gay Dance Party
    8:00–11:00 p.m.
    Campbell Student Union Social Hall
DJ Likk will spin some tunes as attendees let loose and celebrate National Coming Out day with contests and an abundance of dancing.

These events are sponsored by Student Life, the Pride Alliance, United Students Government, the Residence Hall Association, the Equity and Campus Diversity Office, the Weigel Wellness Center, and the Bengal Ally Network.

For more information about the Bengal Ally Network, please contact Charlene Vetter, associate director of the Weigel Wellness Center, or Sean Terry.
