Information Security Awareness: More from the Verizon 2018 Data Breach Investigation Report

Posted:

Verizon reports that educational institutions reported 101 breaches and 292 incidents over the past year. Of these, 81 percent were external, 19 percent internal. Personnel information was breached in 72 percent of the cases, and 11 percent involved breached medical information. Social engineering is the favored tactic. The report also indicates that “sensitive research” (“sensitive” is not defined) is at risk, with 20 percent of attacks launched as espionage. Verizon also reports that 11 percent of the total attacks in the education industry were carried out for “fun.”

Information Security Awareness: More from 2018 Verizon Data Breach Investigation Report

Posted:

The accommodation industry has the highest number of data breaches, 90 percent of which happen at the point of sale (POS), generally through cybercriminal “hacking” and malware installations. POS controllers are targeted in many industries, though in 2017 the accommodation industry saw the most. Do not use your debit card for transactions when staying in a hotel. Use your credit card. If your credit card is lost or stolen, federal law limits your liability for unauthorized charges. Your protection against unauthorized charges depends on the type of card and when you report the loss. According to the Verizon report, last year the accommodation industry suffered 338 breaches and 368 incidents. These are known breaches. Remember, not everyone has been law abiding in reporting breaches (e.g., Uber). Be aware, stay safe.
