Melaine C. Kenyon, director of technology support services for RITE, presented the interactive session "Using LSRS and FLEXspace to Measure Impact and Support Learning Space Master Planning" at the Educause Annual Conference in Anaheim, California, October 25–28. FLEXspace, a 2016 Campus Technology Innovators awardee in the IT Infrastructure and Systems category, is a planning resource shared by technology integrators, facilities, and space planners. It was launched by SUNY in 2012 by the Learning Environments Task Group, a part of the Faculty Advisory Council on Teaching and Technology (FACT²). Today FLEXspace has nearly 2,000 user accounts from more than 800 academic institutions across 35 countries. Kenyon presented with Susan Chichester, chief information officer and director of CIT at SUNY Geneseo; Rebecca Frazee, lecturer at San Diego State University and a member of the FLEXspace core team; and Jim Twetten, formerly of Iowa State University, a member of the FLEXspace core team.

Jason Knight, assistant professor of geography and planning, and three colleagues coauthored the book Shrinking Cities: Understanding Urban Decline in the United States (Routledge, August 2016). The book offers a contemporary look at patterns of shrinkage and decline in the United States. Shrinking Cities juxtaposes the complex and varied processes that contribute to these patterns with broader policy frameworks that have been under consideration to address shrinkage in U.S. cities.

Deborah Silverman, associate professor of communication, gave two presentations at the national meeting of the Public Relations Society of America October 21 and 22 in Indianapolis. On October 21, she chaired the session "Obtaining Sponsorships" for incoming PRSA chapter leaders from across the country at the PRSA Leadership Rally. On October 22, as PRSA’s 2016 national treasurer, she presented the annual treasurer’s report to the PRSA Assembly, the organization’s governing body. PRSA is the world’s largest organization of PR professionals. Silverman is completing five years of service on the national board in December.?

The presentation discussed the role of the media in presidential politics (presidential debates, political advertising, and media satire), media bias, and the role of demographics in electing the next president.
