Bridget María Chesterton, associate professor of history and social studies education, will participate in an invited roundtable discussion, "Soft Coups? Comparing Recent Events in Brazil, Honduras, and Paraguay," on Monday, May 9, at York University in Toronto. Discussants will be Mariana Mota Prado, associate dean of graduate studies in the University of Toronto's Faculty of Law; Juan Marsiaj, lecturer of Latin American studies and political science at the University of Toronto; Luisa Schwartzman, assistant professor of sociology at the University of Toronto; and Raul Burbano, program director for Common Frontiers. The discussion will be moderated by Gillian McGillivray, associate professor of history at York University's Glendon College.

Jodelle Magner, associate professor of mathematics, was invited to facilitate a workshop for Cornell University’s Mathematics K–12 Education Outreach program in Ithaca, New York, on April 9. The workshop regularly brings together mathematics faculty, graduate students, and undergraduate students as well as secondary mathematics teachers from the Finger Lakes region to explore topics in secondary mathematics and mathematics education.

Thomas Reigstad, professor emeritus of English, was a member of the panel "From Research Question to Results: The Publication Pipeline" at the annual Conference on College Composition and Communication, held in Houston, Texas, April 6–9. The session was sponsored by the International Writing Centers Association. Fellow panelists were co-editors of the Writing Center Journal: Michele Eodice, associate provost for academic engagement and director of the OU Writing Center at the University of Oklahoma, and Anna Sicari, first-year-writing instructor at St. John’s University.

Thomas J. Reigstad, Professor Emeritus, English

Thomas Reigstad, professor emeritus of English, has been named to the New York State Education Department’s Learning Standards Review Work Group by New York State Education Commissioner MaryEllen Elia. As a member of the English Language Arts Standards Review Committee, Reigstad will review recommendations from the AIMHighNY survey; review current New York State P–12 ELA Common Core Learning Standards; and make necessary revisions. The ELA Committee, which had over 1,000 applicants, is composed of New York State classroom teachers from prekindergarten to grade 12 as well as curriculum specialists, parents, college professors, and members of the business community.

Leigh Duffy, Lecturer, Philosophy and Humanities

Leigh Duffy, lecturer in the Philosophy and Humanities Department, presented her paper "Yoga, Ethics, and Philosophy" to the Society of Indian Philosophy and Religion at the 90th annual meeting of the American Philosophical Association Pacific Division (PDF, 2MB), held March 30–April 3 in San Francisco, California. Duffy presented the same paper at Buffalo State two weeks later.

Arlesa Shephard, Assistant Professor, Fashion and Textile Technology

Arlesa Shephard, assistant professor of fashion and textile technology, has four quilts displayed in the Amherst Quilters Guild's biennial quilt show, on view April 22–24 at the Buffalo Niagara Heritage Village in Amherst:

  • Night Blooming Cereus: made from a Hawaiian quilt pattern with hand appliqué and hand quilting
  • Sailing Toward the Sun: mixed methods with hand appliqué center panel and hand quilting
  • Calico Butterflies: reversible pieced quilt with hand quilting
  • Stars and Stripes: pieced quilt with hand quilting

With the exception of Night Blooming Cereus (which was adapted from a commercial pattern), all the quilts are her own design (some with variations on traditional blocks) and fabric selection.

Bruce Bryski, associate professor of communication, was interviewed by the Buffalo News for an article that appeared on April 13, 2016, discussing the role of conservative talk radio on the 2016 presidential election. The article examined the effect of talk radio in shaping voter perceptions.

Stephani Foraker, associate professor of psychology, has published her article "Processing of Irregular Polysemes in Sentence Reading" in the Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, and Cognition. The study examines the use of eye-tracking technology to measure how the brain interprets ambiguous words. The article's coauthors are Andreas Brocher, postdoctoral fellow at the University of Cologne, and Jean-Pierre Koenig, professor and chair of the Linguistics Department at the University at Buffalo.

An article by Saziye Bayram, associate professor of mathematics, titled "Periodic Envelopes of Waves over Non-uniform Depth," has been accepted for publication in the journal Physics of Fluids. The article's coauthors are Diane Henderson, professor of mathematics, and Girish Rajan, postdoctoral research scholar in the Pritchard Fluid Mechanics Laboratory, at the Pennsylvania State University.
