Deborah Silverman, associate professor of communication, was elected national treasurer of the Public Relations Society of America for 2016 at its annual meeting in Atlanta, Georgia, on November 2. She is currently finishing her second two-year term on PRSA's board of directors and serves as faculty adviser to Buffalo State's Public Relations Student Society of America chapter. PRSA is the world's largest organization of public relations professionals.

Beth Silverman, communications manager for the Buffalo State Alumni Affairs Office, was elected 2016 president-elect of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) Buffalo Niagara Chapter on November 19. Previously serving as the chapter's secretary, Silverman is currently an assembly delegate, chair of the e-communication committee, and a professional staff adviser to the Buffalo State chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA).

Lynn Boorady, Chair and Associate Professor, Fashion and Textile Technology

Lynn Boorady, department chair and associate professor of fashion and textile technology, received two awards from the International Textile and Apparel Association at the organization's annual conference, held November 9–13 in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Boorady and her colleagues Nick Hall and Jane Ledbury from Manchester Metropolitan University, Grant Emerson and Karen Webster from RMIT in Melbourne, and Bingbing Du from Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology received the 2015 Paper of Distinction Award in the Sustainability and Social Responsibility Track as well as the Educators for Socially Responsible Apparel Practices Teaching Award for their paper "CONNECT Project: A Global Learning Experience on Sustainability in the Fashion Industry." The CONNECT project was a global collaborative effort to bring awareness to students of fashion about sustainability in the professional field.

Faculty-student teams from each institution (Buffalo State, MMU, BIFT, and RMIT) traveled to each university to hold open discussions on the issues of consumption, the environmental impact of textile waste, and creative solutions in the fashion industry. Project aims included encouraging students to become active in the effort to reduce the impact on the environment through sustainable practices while maintaining their creativity and commitment to sustainability efforts through all phases of the fashion cycle from sourcing, manufacturing, and design through end of life.

Wanda Slawinska, associate librarian in Butler Library, was one of 15 educators honored by the General Pulaski Association of Buffalo on September 11.

She also gave an invited lecture, "The Gilded Age and Leon Czolgosz: A Tale Unraveled at the Pan-American Exposition," on October 23 and 30 to two groups of history school teachers in support of Jill M. Gradwell's application for funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities to develop the Landmarks in American History Workshop, "Buffalo's City of Light: The Pan-American Exposition; A Beacon of Progress?"

The Journal of World History has accepted an article by Bridget María Chesterton, associate professor of history and social studies education at Buffalo State College, and Timothy Yang, assistant professor of history at Pacific University in Portland, Oregon, titled "The Sweet Herb: Ka'a He'e and the Paraguayan Origins of the Stevia Plant and Low Calorie Sweetness in the Global Twentieth Century."
