The Burchfield Penney Art Center was honored with two awards from the American Alliance of Museums for Excellence in Publication Design in 2016.

The center's annual report, titled "Detail," received first place honors in the Annual Reports category for museums with annual budgets greater than $750,000. And the exhibition catalog and vinyl album Charles Burchfield: A Resounding Roar, produced in conjunction with the exhibition of the same name, received the Innovations in Print award for museums with annual budgets greater than $750,000. The publication was written by Tullis Johnson, manager of archives and curator at the Burchfield Penney, and Don Metz, associate director and head of public programming at the center. Others recognized in this category were the Bard Graduate Center Gallery in New York City, Getty Publications in Los Angeles, and the Art Institute of Chicago. Both publications were designed by White Bicycle.

Peter M. Carey, chief of police and Amy M. Pedlow, assistant chief of police, served as presenters at the annual National Behavioral Intervention Team Association (NABITA) Conference in San Antonio, Texas, on November 14. They made their presentation along with Kimberly Brunell, J.D., supervisory special agent, Federal Bureau of Investigation–Behavioral Analysis Unit, and Brent Isaacson, M.S., special agent, Federal Bureau of Investigation–Buffalo Field Office. 

The presentation was a case study of a threat assessment and risk of violence by a university student. The case study described the complete threat assessment process from initial behavior, a forensic psychiatric evaluation, a FBI Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU) threat assessment, criminal investigation, arrest, prosecution, and community safety.

Brianna Plummer, Assistant Professor, Fashion and Textile Technology

Brianna Plummer, assistant professor of fashion and textile technology, won two international awards at the annual International Textile and Apparel Conference held this month in Vancouver, Canada. The Alvanon Award for Creative Design was presented to Plummer for her design work called "Origami Transformation" in which a top, skirt, and purse can be packaged in a compact unit, then brought out to be worn. The ATEX Award for Innovation in Textile Instruction was shared with her major professor, Dr. Eulanda Sanders of Iowa State University, for their submission "Practical Application of Half-Scale Patterning for Online Digital Textile Design Procedures."

Michael Littman, Chair and Associate Professor, Business

Michael Littman, chair and associate professor of business, has been invited to serve as a member of the program committee for the 2017 International Project Management Association's 30th World Congress, which will be held in Astana, Kazakhstan.

Since the conference's inception in 2012, Littman has served for six terms on the program committee of the International Scientific Conference on Project Management in the Baltic States. In 2005, he served as a consultant in developing an accredited European M.B.A. in project management that is now taught in seven European universities.

??Elizabeth Silverman, communications manager, Alumni Association, participated in the national Public Relations Society of America's (PRSA) Leadership Rally, a two-day leadership program for incoming PRSA chapter, district, and section leaders, on October 21–22 in Indianapolis. Silverman will become president of the PRSA Buffalo Niagara chapter in January 2017. She has also served as the chapter's secretary, chair of its e-communications committee, and delegate to the national PRSA Assembly, and is the recipient of the chapter's 2013 Rising Star Award. PRSA is the world's largest organization of public relations professionals.

Gerald Mead, lecturer of design, was invited to exhibit his work in a group exhibition titled “The Final Tally” at the Victor Xiu Gallery in Las Vegas, Nevada, on November 8 and the “Past Presidents" exhibition on view at Daemen College from November 3–30. The latter was organized in celebration of the 125th anniversary of the Buffalo Society of Artists. Mead also presented a “Career Development for Artists” workshop in Allegany, New York, on November 12 for the Cattaraugus County Arts Council.

Michelle Blackley Glynn, lecturer in the Communication Department, has been chosen for the second annual Niagara's 12 Under 40 leadership recognition awards. Glynn is the owner and chief creative officer at Full Plate Publicity, a public relations and social media agency for the travel, hospitality, culinary, and luxury lifestyle industries.

Niagara's 12 Under 40 is a joint effort of Leadership Niagara, the Union-Sun & Journal, and the Niagara Gazette to identify up-and-coming leaders who will play a part in a brighter future for Niagara County. Awards will be presented today, November 16, during a breakfast ceremony at Antonio's Banquet & Conference Center in Niagara Falls.

Bridget María Chesterton, Associate Professor, History and Social Studies Education

Bridget María Chesterton, associate professor of history and social studies education, has been invited back to the Liechtenstein Institute on Self-Determination at Princeton University November 17–19 to present "The War of the Pacific (1879–1883): Bolivia's Loss of Access to the Ocean, and Modern Consequences." This is a follow-up to her talk in October at the institute, which was a discussion of the War of the Triple Alliance in South America and the Chaco War.

Howard Payne, Lecturer, Engineering Technology

Howard Payne, lecturer in the Engineering Technology Department, received a community service award from Southeast Works on behalf of the Engineering Technology Department at Buffalo State for work done by the TEC 405W Manufacturing Technology class under his leadership for the past 10 years. Southeast Works is a Western New York organization that works with developmentally disabled adults in performing light industrial work for local businesses. The Community Partner of the Year Award is presented to individuals and organizations to recognize outstanding contributions to Southeast Works, their mission, and their clients. Payne and his students contribute to the local community by applying practical solutions based on their technical education obtained at Buffalo State.

Melaine C. Kenyon, director of technology support services for RITE, presented a multicampus perspective panel, "Practices and Experiences in Navigating the IT Pipeline as Women," at the Educause Annual Conference in Anaheim, California, October 25–28. Kenyon coordinated the panel to weave research, personal stories, and advice and offer effective practices to women who wish to navigate—and succeed in—higher education IT career paths. Panel members were Deborah Keyek-Franssen, associate vice president for digital education and engagement at the University of Colorado System; Bernadette Williams, IT program manager at the University of North Carolina, Charlotte; Beth Schaefer, director of IT services at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee; and Amy Diehl, associate vice president and director of systems and applications at Shippensburg University in Pennsylvania.
