David Wilson, associate professor of mathematics, along with NYS master teachers and Buffalo State lecturers Nilam Yagielski and Elizabeth Kent, presented their research on developing video case studies at the annual National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) Research Conference, held in Washington, D.C., April 23–25. Their talk, "TRU Growth and Development: Creating and Analyzing Case Studies," stemmed from their ongoing research partnership with Math for America and Montclair State University.

Valentin Brimkov, Professor, Mathematics

A paper on problems of intersection graph theory, coauthored by Valentin E. Brimkov, professor of mathematics, and undergraduates Sean Kafer and Matthew Szczepankiewicz from UB and Joshua Terhaar from Buffalo State, has been accepted for publication in the professional journal Discrete Applied Mathematics (Elsevier, forthcoming). The paper received the Best Student Paper Award at a reputable international conference on Combinatorial Image Analysis held in Brno, Czech Republic, in 2014. The paper’s findings provoked considerable interest in the scientific community, and soon after the conference, Jan Kratochvil, a world leader in this research area, and three other established researchers invited Brimkov and his team to combine their efforts and write an extensive paper on the matter. This publication is the result of much hard work by the authors and a prolonged review process.

Jodelle Magner, associate professor of mathematics, and Susan McMillen, professor of mathematics, were invited to facilitate a workshop for Cornell University’s Mathematics K–12 Education Outreach Program in Ithaca, New York, on April 7. The workshop regularly brings together mathematics faculty, graduate students, and undergraduate students as well as secondary mathematics teachers from the Finger Lakes region to explore topics in secondary mathematics and mathematics education.

Jill Gradwell, professor of history and social studies education, has received the Middle States Council for the Social Studies Harry J. Carman Award, presented to an outstanding college professor who supports social studies through effective research, teaching, integrity, service, and professional excellence. This award is named for Dr. Harry J. Carman (1884–1964), a former dean of Columbia University and past president of MSCSS (1927–1928), in recognition of his persistent fight for high standards in every academic area and his personal example of integrity and service.
