Thomas Reigstad, professor emeritus of English, presented “More Eyes: Everybody Needs an Editor” as an invited speaker at the third annual Indie Author Day, held at the Downtown Central Library on October 13. Indie Author Day is a national effort to connect writers with public libraries during a day of presentations, panel discussions, writing, and open mics. The library showcased more than 50 local authors and presentations by four local publishing experts.

Amy Crockford, lecturer in the Speech-Language Pathology Department, published her first children’s book, My Happy Place, which chronicles the experiences of a 10-year-old deaf girl. Ms. Crockford is a course instructor for SLP 101 and SLP 102, American Sign Language 1 and 2. She will host a family-friendly book-signing event on Saturday, September 22, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Flight of Five Winery, 2 Pine Street, in Lockport. September is National Deaf Awareness Month.

Zhang Jie, professor of sociology and director of the Center for China Studies, published his paper "Early Warnings for Suicide Attempt among Chinese Rural Population" in the Journal of Affective Disorders 238: 353–358. The study's coauthors were Juncheng Lyu, Yingying Wang, and Hong Shi.

Zhang Jie, professor of sociology and director of the Center for China Studies, and Dwight A. Hennessy, chair and professor of psychology, published their study "Psychological Strains and Psychological Distress among Chinese Rural Migrant Workers," coauthored with Shuzheng Ren, in the Asian and Pacific Migration Journal 27 (2): 231–241. Dr. Shuzheng was a visiting scholar to the Center for China Studies at Buffalo State for his Ph.D. training in 2016–2017.
