Sobol, department chair and associate professor of criminal justice, presented results from his research examining self-control and police decision making in a simulated environment at the American Society of Criminology Conference, held November 14–17 in Atlanta, Georgia. The study's coauthors were criminal justice professor Scott W. Phillips and associate professor S. Marlon Gayadeen.

Kimberly Hart, associate professor of anthropology, presented the lecture "On Josephine Powell's Life as a Mentor, Collector, and Photographer in Turkey and Beyond" at the George Washington University Textile Museum in Washington, D.C., on November 8. Her gallery talk was presented in conjunction with the exhibit A Nomad's Art: Kilims of Anatolia, based on her contribution to the catalog Kilims as the Cultural Repository of Animal-Human Relationships.

"Moving and Shaking to Master Math," a session at the annual conference of the Association of Mathematics Teachers of New York State (AMTNYS) held in Saratoga Springs, New York, on November 3, targeted elementary school teachers and highlighted work that Jodelle Magner, associate professor of mathematics, and Susan McMillen, professor of mathematics, created through their Mathematics Science Partnership grants.

"I Figure,"a flash fiction piece by Kim Chinquee, associate professor of English, appears in the current edition of The Pushcart Prize: Best of the Small Presses. This is her second appearance in this series, which is the "most honored literary project in America." 

Chinquee is the author of the collections Oh Baby, Pretty, Pistol, Veer, Shot Girls, and the forthcoming collection (2019) tentatively titled C'mon. She is chief editor of Buffalo State's literary journal, ELJ (Elm Leaves Journal), and senior editor of the literary journal New World Writing. She co-directs Buffalo State's writing major.

Jodelle Magner, associate professor of mathematics, was appointed to the Association of Mathematics Teachers of New York State (AMTNYS) 2019–2020 Executive Board as the college-level representative during the organization's 68th annual fall conference, held in Saratoga Springs, New York, November 2 and 3. AMTNYS was founded in 1951 and currently has about 2,100 members statewide. Members of AMTNYS include teachers at the elementary, middle, secondary, and college levels as well as others interested in mathematics and mathematics education.

Dr. Magner also facilitated the college-level meeting at the annual conference of AMTNYS in Saratoga Springs on November 2. College faculty members from across the state came together to discuss current issues and trends affecting college-level students and the teaching of mathematics throughout the state.

The English Department's Kim Chinquee, associate professor; Aimee Levesque, lecturer; and Thomas Reigstad, professor emeritus, participated in The Great American Read, which aired on PBS in late spring through early fall.

The eight-part series explores and celebrates the power of reading, told through the prism of America’s 100 best-loved novels (as chosen in a national survey). The series featured entertaining and informative documentary segments, with compelling testimonials from celebrities, authors, notable Americans, and book lovers across the country.

Levesque conducted a two-person panel interview that included live callers, and participated in the finale discussion when the winning book was announced. Chinquee and Reigstad were interviewed by Buffalo and Erie County Public Library director Mary Jean Jakubowski about what makes a great novel.

Their topics included Rocket Power Math! Supporting Algebraic Thinking with Number Tricks, and Tape Diagrams for Algebra Class.

Gerhard Falk, professor emeritus of sociology, has published his 27th book, Religion and Social Change: The Influence of Religion on American Culture (Algora Publishing, 2018). Drawing parallels and contrasts between Catholicism, mainline Protestantism, and Judaism, Dr. Falk talks about history and philosophy, political campaigns, social movements, popular music, and literature. He shows how religious traditions influence us and how they affect politics, social stratification, and even the military. The book was featured in the October 2018 issue of Wish Journal (p. 33; PDF, 14 MB), a publication of the Buffalo Jewish Federation.
