AFP 2012 Highlight: Featured Speakers

Please join us for the Anne Frank Project's fourth annual conference, AFP 2012: Embracing Responsibility, September 12–15 at Buffalo State.

This year's featured speakers are Carl Wilkens, a humanitarian aid worker who refused to leave Rwanda during the genocide (September 12, Warren Enters Theatre); James Waller, Cohen Chair for Holocaust and Genocide Studies at Keene State College (September 13, Flexible Theatre); Eva Hassett, executive director of the International Institute of Buffalo (September 14, Flexible Theatre); and Jeffrey Kahn, deputy director for policy and administration at Johns Hopkins University's Berman Institute of Bioethics (September 15, Flexible Theatre).

This year's featured speakers are internationally reputed leaders in their disciplines. This is an excellent opportunity to engage your students in unique common experiences to be included in your course curriculum. Each presentation is free and on campus. We will discuss assessment methods and the process of matching learning outcomes to appropriate assessments. Presented by Sue McMillen on Tuesday, September 25, from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. and repeated on Wednesday, September 26, from 2:00 to 3:15 p.m. in the Professional Development Center, E. H. Butler Library 181B.

Flu Vaccine Clinic on Campus Today

Flu vaccines will be available on campus today, October 11, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in E. H. Butler Library 210. No appointment is necessary. The vaccine will be available in shot or mist form.

The following insurances will be accepted: Community Blue, Independent Health, Blue Choice, and Medicare Part B. Employees must show their insurance plan ID cards. (Participation in or acceptance of any insurance is not a guarantee of benefits or payment in full. Copayments or a deductible may apply. Please call your insurance provider's member services department with questions regarding coverage.)

Employees without proper insurance coverage will be charged $25 for the flu shot or $35 for the flu mist.

Empire Plan enrollees can obtain their flu shots from a participating provider’s (doctor’s) office for their usual copay if they wish to do so.

If you have any questions regarding your health insurance coverage, please call Employee Benefits at ext. 4821 or the member services department of your insurance company. The phone number should be on your insurance card.

Rooftop Poetry Club Features Morani Kornberg-Weiss

Please join the Rooftop Poetry Club for a reading featuring Morani Kornberg-Wiess on Tuesday, October 9, from 12:15 to 1:15 p.m. in E. H. Butler Library's International Students Reading Area (third floor SE quadrant).

Kornberg-Weiss moved from Tel Aviv, Israel, to Buffalo to pursue a Ph.D. in English in the University at Buffalo's Poetics Program. Her scholarship revolves around the Israeli-Palestineian conflict and its literary manifestations, protest poetry, postcolonial literature and theory, the lyric tradition, and ekphrasis.

Her poetry has been published or is forthcoming in Omnia Vanitas Review, Kadar Koli, the Last Stanza, Voices Israel, Re-Vision, Papilio, and Genius Floored. Kornberg-Weiss's translation of Miracles and More, written by Israeli poet Karen Alkalay-Gut, was recently published by Keshev (Tel Aviv, Israel). She hopes to complete two poetry manuscripts, titled "Folding into Her Self" and "Dear Darwish," later this year. She currently lives in Buffalo with her husband, dog, two cats, and massive owl collection.

Rooftop Poetry Club Features Kim Chinquee and Eric Beeny

Please join the Rooftop Poetry Club for a reading featuring Kim Chinquee and Eric Beeny on Tuesday, November 6, from 12:15 to 1:15 p.m. in the International Students Reading Area of E. H. Butler Library (third-floor SE quadrant, under the flags).

Chinquee is the author of the collections Oh Baby (2008), Pretty (2010), and Pistol (2012). An associate professor of English at Buffalo State, she has received several literary prizes, including the Pushcart and Henfield prizes. She has been widely published in periodicals and journals such as the Nation, Denver Quarterly, In Posse Review, the Arkansas Review, and the Mississippi Review.

Eric Beeny is the author of The Dying Bloom (2009), Snowing Fireflies (2010), Of Creatures (2010), Milk Like a Melted Ghost (2011), Pseudo-Masochism (2011), How Much the Jaw Weighs (2011), and Lepers and Mannequins (2011). His fiction and poetry have appeared in several journals, both in print and online. His blog is Dead End on Progressive Ave.

SUNY B-140W Employee Tuition Assistance Program

The deadline to submit applications for the SUNY B-140W Tuition Assistance Program for the fall 2012 semester is Friday, September 28.

Staff members may apply for tuition assistance after six months of service; faculty members may apply after one semester of service. The following employees are eligible:

  • Full-time Buffalo State faculty and professional or classified employees
  • Part-time and/or temporary Buffalo State faculty and professional or classified employees who are employed at least half time (faculty must teach at least two courses in the semester)
  • Full-time Research Foundation employees provided they work on the Buffalo State campus

Program funds may be used for courses at SUNY campuses only. Eligible employees may apply for a 50 percent waiver of SUNY tuition for up to two courses per semester, to a maximum of 15 credit hours per academic year. Tuition assistance is limited to regular in-state undergraduate or graduate tuition rates. The level of support may be adjusted when necessary if funding is not adequate to cover applications received. Contact the Human Resource Management Office, ext. 4821, for applications and program guidelines.
