A Study of Decomposition and Its Relationship to Temperature in WNY

Posted:

Anthropology major Jessica Stabell will present her summer research on the rate and stages of soft tissue decay on Monday, September 17, in Classroom Building A209. Her presentation will take place in the Applied Climatology class, between 3:00 and 4:00 p.m. All are welcome.

Daily temperature is important in considering the stages of decay, as decay is far more temperature dependent than time dependent. Using the accumulated-degree-day (ADD) method, Stabell developed an ADD index specific to Western New York for each of the decay stages. This method provides an accurate estimate of time since death.

BSSC Film Series: 'Silence of the Bees'

Posted:

In conjunction with its recent installation of a pollinator garden on campus, the Buffalo State Sustainability Council presents the Peabody Award–winning film Silence of the Bees on Tuesday, September 18, from 12:15 to 1:15 p.m. in Bulger Communication Center East 2. Honeybees, essential pollinators, have virtually disappeared by the millions from hives in recent years. Scientists are scrambling to identify the cause of this worldwide phenomenon, dubbed colony collapse disorder (CCD). Without the work of honeybees and other pollinators, 30 percent of food supplies and up to 70 percent of wild plant life are at risk. Silence of the Bees explores the irreplaceable role of pollinators, the theories behind this mystery, and the continuing research on CCD. Faculty members are encouraged to recommend this film screening to their students. For further information, please e-mail bssc@buffalostate.edu.
