Carol Y. Beckley, associate professor in the Theater Department, teaches set design, a career made possible in part by help from others. “Working my way through college was tough,” she said. “Scholarships and the generosity of individuals assisted me every step of the way.”
Each of the three funds Carol supports is special to her. “The McCarthy-Eskew Scholarship is dear to my heart,” she said. “Donna McCarthy, former chair of Theater, was my mentor for 15 years. Her mother, Betty Eskew, helped out in our costume shop. So I am honored to donate to a fund created by people who contributed to my success and the success of hundreds of students.”
The Dr. Harry and Lorraine Ausprich Endowed Scholarship is “the exact kind of scholarship I received as an undergraduate,” said Carol.
Finally, Carol supports the Adult Student Scholarship Fund because of her mother, who took one class a semester for 12 years to complete her bachelor’s degree. Carol said, “I want to help other adult learners who value education and are following their dreams.”
Payroll deduction makes it easier for Carol to be generous. “The amount I give every two weeks is something I can afford,” she said. “Giving the whole amount at once would be impossible.”
Join Carol. Support our students and choose a fund for your gift. For additional information about giving to the Faculty and Staff Appeal, please contact Louis Noce.
The Burchfield Penney Art Center (BPAC) Street Team is hosting an open house on Friday, April 15, from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. Students of all majors are invited to take tours, participate in art activities, and grab some food while meeting members and officers of the group.
The purpose of the BPAC Street Team is to provide Buffalo State students with experience and participation in museum studies, education, communication, and volunteer services. We seek to unite the campus museum and the campus body so that as many students as possible can benefit from the programs and resources of the Burchfield Penney. Activities for the first year included museum field trips and a speaker series with the Anthropology and Art Conservation departments as well as a local design firm.

This year, the Counseling Center is hosting a free Campus Alcohol Screening Day to help identify at-risk drinking on campus, Thursday, April 14. Anonymous, free alcohol screenings are available online. The process will only take a few minutes. After completing a screening, students receive referral information on where they can go to discuss their results or any other concerns.
While many believe alcohol is a normal part of college life, social drinking can quickly develop into at-risk drinking. Often students think that because they don’t drink every day or feel like they need to drink, their alcohol use is safe. However, this year the staff at the Counseling Center wants students to know that you don’t have to have an alcohol problem to have a problem with alcohol.
“When students engage in extreme or high-risk drinking, they are not only negatively affecting their health, they are also more likely to put themselves in risky situations that could be harmful to themselves or others, and may inadvertently cause death” said Joan McCool, director of the Counseling Center.
