Physics/Chemistry Lecture Series

Posted:

Professor Jonathan Bird from the Electrical Engineering Department at the University at Buffalo will present “Bridging the Gap between Electronics and Photonics: THz Nanoelectronics” on Thursday, October 13, at 12:30 p.m. in Science Building 272. Bird will discuss a region of the electromagnetic spectrum that has stubbornly resisted development: the “terahertz” (THz) region ranging from 0.1 to 10 THz. Essentially, this regime separates the worlds of optics and electronics and so has been poorly served in terms of technologies. The development of new technologies that can unleash the untapped power of this regime could therefore be revolutionary, with impact in areas such as homeland security, medical diagnostics (oncology), nondestructive evaluation, and telecommunications. In this presentation, he will review the challenges and opportunities of this field and also discuss research that he is engaged in to develop these new technologies.
