Exploring the Intersection of Language and Society

Posted:

A. Michael Vermy, assistant professor of modern and classical languages, will meet with the Anthropology Society in Classroom Building B116 (Anthropology Lab) today during Bengal Pause. Vermy’s research investigates the intimate relationship between language and identity. In this talk, he will discuss what we know when we ‘know’ a language. In turn, this knowledge shapes other aspects of our lives including language socialization and language register. Studying these aspects of language helps to reveal the connection between language and power and how this link impacts our everyday interactions.
