Data Center Upgrades

Computing and Technology Services will be performing minor network maintenance on a number of servers in our data center. There will be a short period of downtime on Tuesday, February 9, starting at 5:00 a.m. while upgrades are performed. This downtime should only last a few minutes, during which you may experience a brief interruption in service (i.e., accessing e-mail, connecting to network shares). We don't anticipate any problems, but contact the Help Desk (ext. 4357) to report any issues.

EmTech Talk: The Evolving Book: 2010 Is the Year of the eBook

The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) featured a variety of new eBook services and devices that will give Kindle a run for their money. Regardless of your opinion of eBooks, the announcement of these new devices shows that companies are at the starting line of what is bound to be a highly competitive year for eBooks and eReaders. On Wednesday, February 17, from noon to 1:00 p.m. we will take a look at the current eBook industry and how it might affect the academic world. Come voice your opinions and share your questions about eBooks. Join your colleagues in Bulger Communication Center 104 as the spring series of Emerging Technology Talks (EmTech Talks) begins.

Chinese Paintings Exhibit

Works created by professors Liu Yan and Sun Di will be displayed in E. H. Butler Library's Mezzanine Gallery (second floor) through Monday, February 15. Professors Liu Yan and Sun Di are visiting scholars in the Beijing Teacher Training Center for Higher Education (BTTCHE), a collaborative project with the International and Exchange Programs Office and the Research Foundation. Please stop by the Mezzanine Gallery to view the exhibit. A reception is planned for Thursday, February 11; watch the Daily for more details.

Wenhui Zhao will present the topic "GIS and Remote Sensing Researches for Environmental Monitoring at the Capital Normal University, Beijing, China,” Tuesday, February 9, at 4:30 p.m. in the Classroom Building A209. Refreshments will be provided. Professor Wenhui Zhao is a visiting scholar from Capital Normal University of China working with Tao Tang of the Geography and Planning Department. Support comes from the International and Exchange Programs Office and the Research Foundation.

Reminder: Professional Staff Participation Encouraged in Presidential Search

Professional staff are reminded to participate in the presidential search process, as they are able, by attending sessions scheduled specifically for professional staff. There are two sessions today, Thursday, February 4. The first session, with Dr. Kathyrn Cruz-Uribe, will be held from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. The second session, with Dr. Aaron Podolefsky, will be today from 3:00 to 3:45 p.m. Both sessions will be held in E. H. Butler Library 210. The final session will be held with Dr. William Lowe on Monday, February 8, from 3:30 to 4:15 p.m. in the Burchfield Penney Art Center.

Study Abroad? Don't Assume You Can't Afford It!

Students can learn how financial aid applies to overseas programs, how they may qualify for additional aid, and the timeline for processing aid applications, next Thursday, February 11, at 12:15 p.m. in Bulger Communication Center South. They will find out about scholarships that are available and other creative ways to finance participation in programs abroad. Please encourage your students to attend this workshop!
