An article by Joy Guarino, director of global engagement and professor of dance, and alumna Enya-Kalia Jordon (arts and letters), titled "Dance and Civic & Community Engagement: Service-Learning and Study Abroad as Vehicles to Experiential Learning, Cultural Humility, and Global Citizenship," was recently published in Dancing into Communities Canada Virtual Conference Proceedings July 10-15, 2022: 15th Conference of Dance and the Child International. Professor Guarino and Ms. Jordon presented the paper at the 2022 Dance and the Child International (daCi) conference, hosted virtually by York University, in Toronto, Canada.

Brooke Winckelmann, instructional designer, and Meghan Pereira, director, Instructional Design and Distance Learning; Keli Garas-York, professor of elementary education, literacy, and educational leadership, literacy specialist program coordinator, and director of the Literacy Center; and Patricia George, lecturer of elementary education, literacy, and educational leadership, were recognized for their Collaborative OSCQR Peer Review Process at the SUNY Online Summit held at the SUNY Global Center in New York City on February 28.

Their work was recognized during the SUNY Effective Online Practices Award Program, which aims to collect, share, and showcase the online best practices, strategies, and innovative online teaching and learning activities or programs of exemplary SUNY online practitioners from across the SUNY system. This project and many others around SUNY are hosted within the SUNY Effective Online Practices Repository.

John Draeger, Professor, Philosophy

John Draeger, professor of philosophy and director of the Teaching and Learning Center, has been selected by the Chancellor's Office as a SUNY representative for an 18-month project on "Civil Discourse." The project is affiliated with the Institute for Citizens and Scholars and sponsored by an organization called College Presidents for Civic Preparedness. Civility and the respect we owe those with whom we disagree have been central to Dr. Draeger's work as an ethicist for many years.

Thomas J. Reigstad, professor emeritus of English, published a prose poem, "Wordsworth, Baseball, and Me," in Turnstyle: The SABR Journal of Baseball Arts 4:36-39 (2024). The poem describes coming of age in the 1950s and '60s in Buffalo through the lens of baseball. SABR, the Society for American Baseball Research, is a membership organization dedicated to preserving and fostering the history and record of baseball. Professor Reigstad serves on SABR's Baseball and the Arts Research Committee and is a member of the Luke Easter chapter.

Venkateswara Yenugonda, visiting research scholar at Buffalo State working under the supervision of Professor Daniel MacIsaac and Assistant Professor Arjun K. Pathak in the Physics Department, recently coauthored two published articles: "Perturbation-Tuned Triple Spiral Metamagnetism and Tricritical Point in Kagome Metal ErMn6Sn6," in the journal Communications Materials (2024, 5:113); and "Magnetotransport and Electronic Structure of the Axion Insulator MnSb8Te13" in Physical Review B (2024, 110:4).

On behalf of the Buffalo State Residence Life Office, Tiffany Bromfield, associate director of residence life and inclusion, participated in a conversation with colleagues from New York University, SUNY Binghamton, Clemson University, and Denver University about changes to the live-in student-staff position (resident assistants). The article, "The First Domino: Let's Talk about Modifying RA Responsibilities," was published in Talking Stickthe official magazine of the Association of College and University Housing Officers-International (ACUHO-I).

The Buffalo Niagara Chapter of the American Society for Public Administration (ASPA) has elected Laurie Buonanno, professor of political science, public administration, and planning, to the position of president-elect (2024-2025, president 2025-2026) and Suparna Soni, associate professor of political science, public administration, and planning, to its board of directors (2024-2026). ASPA represents more than 9,500 of the nation's scholars, public servants, and future administrators. The Buffalo Niagara Chapter plans regular events and activities designed to educate and offer networking opportunities, as well as to encourage college students and career changers to consider a future in public service.

Laurie Buonanno, professor of political science, public administration, and planning; and Frederick Floss, professor of economics and finance, were appointed by Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz to serve on the Erie County Citizens Salary Review Commission. The Erie County Charter requires the convening of a nine-member commission prior to any salary changes for the county executive, county clerk, county comptroller, county sheriff, and county legislators. Commission members elected Dr. Buonanno as their chair. The commission met nine times from January through early April, delivering its report on April 2, 2024. Its salary recommendations were approved by the Erie County Legislature on June 20.

Shaw, associate professor emeritus of mathematics, and James Guyker, professor emeritus of mathematics, published a joint paper, "On Parametric and Matrix Solutions to the Diophantine Equation x2 + dy2 - z2 = 0 Where d Is a Positive Square-Free Integer," in the International Journal of Mathematics and Mathematical Sciences (September 2023).

From the Abstract:
The well-known matrix-generated tree structure for Pythagorean triplets (i.e., when d = 1) is extended to the solutions of the above equation. The proof is based on a parametrization of these solutions as well as on a dual version of Fermat's method of descent.

Krista Vince Garland, associate professor of exceptional education, earned an enhancement degree (M.S.) in clinical mental health counseling from Niagara University in May 2024. She will use this to enrich her courses in teacher preparation for special education.
