Angela C. Thering, Ph.D., lecturer in the Higher Education Administration and Adult Education Department, presented in two sessions at the SUNY OER Summit 2024, supported by SUNY CPD. On October 16 she presented "Instructor Reflections on Torus and OLI at Carnegie Mellon: Gathering and Using Data as Part of the Iterative Design Process"; and on October 17 she presented with a panel of DS4EDU fellows in a session titled "Learning about Learning: Opportunities and Experiences in OLI Professional Development."

Victor Kasper Jr., associate professor of economics and finance, presented his paper "A Comparison of Approaches to Estimating the Rate of Surplus Value, Rate of Profit, and the Net Operating Rate of Profit: The Issue of Capital" at the 14th annual conference of the International Initiative for Promoting Political Economy, held at Bilgi University in Istanbul, Turkey, September 4-7. The paper is a collaborative work with Nikos Stravelakis of the Department of Economics at National Kapodistrian University of Athens.

Curtis Haynes Jr., Associate Professor, Economics and Finance

Curtis Haynes Jr., associate professor of economics and finance, was invited to speak as part of a panel discussing cooperative economic projects in the Buffalo area on September 24. The panel was part of the Cooperative Academy, a 13 week-course facilitated by Cooperation Buffalo, a community-led resource center whose mission is to train and educate in cooperative enterprise development.

Dr. Haynes spoke to a group of more than 20 entrepreneurs about his long history in the local cooperative community. He started with his work as part of the Resurgent City Center, a HUD COPC-funded center at Buffalo State College in the mid to late 1990s on through his current work with the Mondragon Village Association, a local real estate holding and management cooperative, of which he is a member. He explained how his work is a continuation of his applied research, first starting with his arriving at Buffalo State in 1993 as part of the college's (now university's) urban mission.

Curtis Haynes Jr., associate professor of economics and finance, was invited to speak as part of an entrepreneurial panel, "What Does It Take to Be the Boss?" during M&T Bank College Day on Thursday, September 26, at the M&T technology incubator in the Seneca 1 building in downtown Buffalo. The event included close to 100 high school seniors from throughout Western New York. Dr. Haynes spoke about the significance of vision and mission along with grit and determination in entrepreneurship.

Lorna Perez, associate professor of English, presented two community talks for Just Buffalo Literary Center in anticipation of Sandra Cisneros's visit to Buffalo on October 10. On October 2, she led an online virtual discussion of The House on Mango Street, which she has published two articles on, and on October 7, she led an in-person discussion at Tipico Coffee. The events were sponsored, in part, by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts Big Read program.

Lorna Perez, associate professor of English, has been selected to continue her work as a SUNY Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Social Justice Fellow for 2024-2025. Dr. Perez was part of the inaugural DEISJ cohort in 2023-2024, and she will continue working on developing teaching resources and support for the DEISJ requirement in SUNY's general education program.

Kathy R. Doody, professor of exceptional education, has coauthored a book with Michelle Hartley-McAndrew, M.D., titled Medical and Educational Needs for Autism (Academic Press, 2024). This resource is designed to help readers better understand and support individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Written for caregivers, educators, related service providers, administrators, and medical providers, the book provides a comprehensive look at interventions for individuals with ASD that are evidence-based and effective.

Xingwang Qian, professor of economics and finance and founding member of the Global Studies Institute, and Vida Vanchan, interim associate dean of the School of the Professions and director of the Global Studies Institute, presented their research paper, "Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in ASEAN Countries: US Decoupling Strategies?" at the annual New York Conference on Asian Studies (NYCAS), hosted by the University at Buffalo September 27-28. This study analyzed FDI flows of 180 countries from 2010 to 2022, including those of the U.S. to ASEAN countries and from other countries. It revealed the complementary effects between FDI and trade, U.S. withdrawal from world affairs during the Trump administration; and the increased ties and trade flows from and among other developing countries to and within Southeast Asia.
