Mayr's 100th Birthday Recognized by Lecture

Harvard biologist Meredith Esther Protas will give a lecture on evolutionary genetics during Bengal Pause, Thursday, 213 Science Building, in honor of the 100th birthday of "big thinker" American biologist Ernst Mayr.
Mayr was among the scientists who led the way to the conceptual synthesis of Mendelian genetics and Darwinian evolution. For his contributions to modern biology, Mayr was awarded the National Medal of Science.
Protas is in the next generation of scientists extending the understanding of evolution by studying how genes affect adaptive traits.

Research and Creativity Council Incentive Funds

Research and Creativity Council Incentive Funds are intended to generate additional sponsored programs. Successful applicants are expected to submit a grant proposal within one year of receiving an incentive award.

Expenditures may include: travel, secretarial assistance, consultation, preparation of specialized support materials, and release time. Maximum funds available from the Research and Creativity Council are $7,000 per proposal.

Biologist to Lecture on Evolution

In celebration of the 100th birthday of 20th century "big thinker" Ernst Mayr, the Biology and Chemistry departments are sponsoring a lecture Thursday, Nov. 18, on genetic evolution by Harvard University biologist Meredith Esther Protas.
Protas will discuss Mayr's work and then describe her own studies with evolution in blind cavefish. The lecture will be during Bengal Pause in Room 213 of the Science Building.

Information Session on U.S. Student Fulbright Program

On Thursday, November 18 at 12:15 p.m. in Bacon 117, learn about opportunities for U.S. students to secure fellowships for overseas graduate study or research, or for assistantships to teach English in a number of other countries. This session is particularly aimed at students who will be eligible to apply in October 2005 for the 2006–2007 academic year (i.e., those receiving bachelor's degrees in December 2004 or May 2005 or currently enrolled in graduate programs). Faculty are welcome and are asked to encourage promising students to attend.

Autumn Harvest Celebration to Benefit Massachusetts Avenue Project

Hospitality students will be your hosts with Massachusetts Avenue Project's (MAP)Food Ventures program at an "Autumn Harvest Celebration" Friday, November 12th, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the lobby of Rockwell Hall. Tickets are $18 when purchased in advance and $20 at the door, student tickets are $10.00. The ethnic specialty menu is being prepared by MAP entrepreneurs.
