Community Meet and Greet: September 5

Attention, students, faculty, staff, and community members who live in the neighborhood near Buffalo State (Elmwood, Forest, Grant, and Potomac): The Buffalo State Community Meet and Greet event will be held on Saturday, September 5, from noon to 3:00 p.m. near Buffalo State's Student Apartment Complex (STAC) at Grant Street and Rockwell Road. Reservations are required. Fill out the online RSVP form.

The event will provide free food, fun, raffles, information, and entertainment to all ages, including families with small children. Our goal is to allow students and residents the opportunity to get to know one another in a safe and positive environment.

Bring 10 cans to donate to Steven's Spirit of Giving Random Acts of Kindness Club for an extra raffle ticket!

We are very excited about the opportunity to better connect our campus and students with the city of Buffalo, its residents, and its citizens. Please contact Paula A. Fall Equinox Pumpkin Drop: September 22

In what has become a fall tradition at Buffalo State, we will once again have our annual Pumpkin Drop on Tuesday, September 22. Join us on the south side of the Classroom Building between 1:00 and 1:30 p.m. We will drop a pumpkin from the roof of the Classroom Building to celebrate the fall equinox, the seasonal shift from summer to fall. Sign the pumpkin before the drop (brings good luck) and enjoy free cider and cookies. This event is organized by students in the meteorology and climatology program (Geography and Planning Department) and supported by the Arthur W. Gielow Meteorology Fund.

First Friday Mass

Come and celebrate Mass on the First Friday of each month at 8:00 a.m. in the Newman Center Chapel. We will gather for Mass and start the month with a renewed perspective. Stay for a cup of coffee afterward or take a cup to go. Our upcoming celebration will take place this Friday, September 4. The Newman Center is located at 1219 Elmwood Avenue, across the street from the Burchfield Penney Art Center.

Annual Convocation and Mass of the Holy Spirit: September 13

The Newman Center at Buffalo State invites everyone to gather as a community of faith to formally open the academic year and celebrate the annual Convocation and Liturgy of the Holy Spirit on Sunday, September 13, at 10:30 a.m. in the Campbell Student Union Social Hall. We welcome all members of the community to join with students, staff, faculty, family, and friends for Mass. This year, we will honor Sr. Charlene Fontana, SSJ, of the Student Life Office with the John Henry Cardinal Newman Award in recognition of her support of Catholic Campus Ministry.

Faculty and staff members are invited to march in the academic procession. Academic regalia is encouraged. A light reception will follow the Mass. UUP Fall Kickoff Barbecue: September 4

Buffalo State members of United University Professions (UUP) are invited to register online in advance for the free annual UUP Fall Kickoff Barbecue on Friday, September 4, from noon to 1:30 p.m. in Perry Quad (rain location: Campbell Student Union Social Hall). Advance registration is required to attend the barbecue.

Enjoy delicious barbecued chicken or veggie burgers, macaroni salad, coleslaw, potato salad, rolls and butter, beverages, and cupcakes. Food is fresh from Krolick’s. Come and meet your UUP colleagues and enjoy quality back-to-school time together. Meet and greet state and chapter UUP leaders who will be attending the event.

The barbecue is a UUP members-only event. To verify membership status, examine your pay stub. The pay stub should say “UUP Member” on the lower right. If it says “UUP Agency Fee,” you are not a member. UUP membership carries many entitlements, including voting on contacts and in local chapter elections and eligibility for benefit programs in retirement. To check on membership status or to see if you are eligible to become a full UUP member in time for the barbecue, please contact chapter assistant Jean Yarwood, 878-5732, before August 27. There is no additional cost for membership.

Please be sure to register online for the barbecue by Thursday, August 27. The registration link has been provided in e-vites already e-mailed to members. Advance registration also makes registrants eligible for prizes.

Retirement Party for Dale Swain: August 12

Dale Swain, supervisor to the HVAC and electrical shops, is retiring after 37 years of service at Buffalo State. The campus community is invited to stop by and wish Dale an enjoyable retirement on Wednesday, August 12, between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. in the Sports Arena Bengal Room (Sports Arena 226).

Employees who work in Campus Services will be permitted to use their 45-minute lunch period at any time between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. to attend this event.

Barnes & Noble at Buffalo State will host a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle Party with games, crafts, and pizza on Thursday, August 6, from noon to 2:00 p.m. Master Khechen Martial Arts Academy will be on hand to perform a demo and teach some awesome Ninja skills.
