Buffalo State UPD Represented at 2015 Tour de Force 9/11 Memorial Ride

Posted:

Amy Pedlow, assistant chief of University Police, will join law enforcement officers from across the country at the Freedom Tower in New York City to participate in a 270-mile bicycle ride to Boston, Massachusetts. The 2015 Tour de Force 9/11 Memorial Ride will depart with 300 riders from New York City today, September 10, and cycle through the lower Hudson valley, past the lush countryside of Connecticut and over the rolling hills of Massachusetts. An additional 150 cyclists from the Boston area will join the ride for the last leg as the tour rolls into Boston Harbor for Sean’s Ride, a ride dedicated to the memory of MIT Police Officer Sean Collier, before coming to an end on Sunday, September 13, at the Boston Marathon finish line.

The Tour de Force's dual mission is to honor the victims of 9/11 by keeping their memory alive through cycling events, and to raise funds to benefit the families of police officers who are killed in the line of duty nationwide each year. This will be the sixth year that Pedlow is riding. She will share pictures of her journey through the University Police Facebook page.

Join the UPstanders Team for the 'Out of the Darkness' Walk in Delaware Park: September 12

Posted:

There's still time to join the Buff State "UPstanders" team for the Out of the Darkness walk to support the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention on Saturday, September 12, from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in Delaware Park (near the zoo). The UPstanders developed out of the Buffalo State Cares initiative to prevent suicide on campus. UPstanders are the opposite of bystanders in that UPstanders are active in finding solutions and getting involved. Register online or sign up the day of the walk. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. and remain open until the walk begins. There will be entertainment, too. We would love to have you join Buff Staters and friends in this Buffalo community event.

This walk is the final activity for our seventh annual Mental Health Awareness Week, taking place all this week. The intention of Buffalo State Mental Health Awareness Week is to get the campus community talking openly about the issues that surround mental health and mental illness and to raise awareness of the issues people face. It is also a time to get people thinking about their own mental well-being and reaching out to others. Connecting with others, positively engaging with our community, looking out for each other, and being compassionate toward others and toward ourselves makes a big difference in the quality of our mental health.

The chair of the walk is Charlene Vetter, the Counseling Center's interim associate director, and the chair of Mental Health Awareness Week is Suzanne Johnson, senior counselor. Please visit the Counseling Center website or call 878-4436 with questions or for additional information. Thank you.
