Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) Alumni Leadership Workshop: April 6

The Buffalo State Alumni Association and Professional Development Center will hold the first professional development workshop for young alumni of the Educational Opportunity Program on Saturday, April 6, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the LoRusso Alumni and Visitor Center. This all-day workshop will provide professional coaching, leadership training, and networking with fellow peers for Buffalo State EOP alumni.

Workshop Overview

  • Three seminars on leadership and critical problem solving
  • Access to FourSight training tools ($100 value)
  • Networking happy hour at Hotel Henry

The $20 cost of attendance includes a continental breakfast, buffet lunch, and one drink ticket to enjoy at Hotel Henry after the workshop.

Please apply online by 11:59 p.m. Thursday, March 7. Alumni who are selected to attend the workshop will be notified of their acceptance by Friday, March 15.

Tell Students: Proposal Deadline for SUNY Undergraduate Research Conference - March 8

The deadline for submission of proposal abstracts for the fifth annual SUNY Undergraduate Research Conference (SURC) is Friday, March 8. Buffalo State undergraduates are cordially invited to submit proposals to participate in the all-day event with luncheon and keynote speaker, to be held Saturday, April 27, on the campus of Niagara County Community College. Student proposals for research poster sessions, oral presentations, and performances of creative work are welcome. Reminder: State-Funded Travel to North Carolina, Mississippi Prohibited

Governor Cuomo’s executive orders banning state-funded travel to the states of North Carolina (order issued on March 28, 2016) and Mississippi (order issued on April 5, 2016) remain in effect. The bans include travel funded by the Buffalo State College Foundation and the SUNY Research Foundation.

Today: Deadline for SUNY B-140W Employee Tuition Assistance Program

Today is the last day to submit applications for the SUNY B-140W Tuition Assistance Program for spring 2019 courses.

Staff members may apply for tuition assistance after six months of service; faculty members may apply after one semester of service. The following employees are eligible:

  • Full-time Buffalo State faculty members and professional or classified employees.
  • Part-time or temporary Buffalo State faculty members and professional or classified employees who are employed at least half time (faculty must teach at least two courses in the semester).
  • Full-time Research Foundation employees, provided they work on the Buffalo State campus.

Program funds may be used for courses at SUNY campuses only. Eligible employees may apply for a 50 percent waiver of SUNY tuition for up to two courses a semester, to a maximum of 15 credit hours an academic year. Tuition assistance is limited to regular in-state undergraduate or graduate tuition rates. The level of support may be adjusted when necessary if funding is not adequate to cover applications received.

After submitting an application, employees who decide to drop a class or find it has been covered by another source are asked to please notify Human Resource Management immediately to update their applications.

Shadow Puppeteer Theater Workshop: March 14

Please join us for an exciting shadow puppeteer theater workshop with master puppeteer Darsono Hadiraharjo on Thursday, March 14, from 12:15 to 1:30 p.m. in Upton Hall's Warren Enters Theater. Wayang is a form of puppet theater art found in Indonesia and other parts of Southeast Asia. The workshop features puppets, vocal narration, characteristic movements, and scenes giving the audience a unique experience. Mr. Hadiraharjo is a visiting scholar and guest director of the Cornell Gamelan Ensemble at Cornell University. This event is part of the eighth annual Southeast Asia Week celebration March 11–14 and is free and open to the public.

Democracy and the State of Politics around the World: March 13

Please join us for the panel discussion "Democracy and the State of Politics around the World," presented by Patrick McGovern, Atta Ceesay, and Kyeonghi Baek of the Political Science Department and Vida Vanchan of the Geography and Planning Department, on Wednesday, March 13, from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. in Bulger Communication Center 422. This event is part of the eighth annual Southeast Asia Week celebration March 11–14 and is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.

This panel seeks to provide a geopolitical framework of regions around the globe by providing information on the current state of politics in North America, Africa, East Asia, and Southeast Asia. The discussion will include the current state of democracy in these regions as well as how the current state of global politics affects the United States and vice versa.

CANCELED: 'Politics and Current Situation of Indonesia' - March 13

Abdulkadir Jailani, consul general of the Republic of Indonesia in New York, will present "Politics and Current Situation of Indonesia" on Wednesday, March 13, from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m. in Caudell Hall 127. This event is part of the eighth annual Southeast Asia Week celebration March 11–14 and is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.

Mr. Jailani is an eminent and experienced diplomat who has served the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia for more than 20 years. Mr. Jailani earned a master of European law and policy from Portsmouth University, UK, and attended the doctor of law program at the University of Indonesia from 2002 until 2005. Mr. Jailani’s role includes supporting Indonesia’s strategic foreign and domestic policy interests. He has served as a lead negotiator in the establishment of Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Framework Instrument on Protection of the Rights of Migrant Workers and as vice chairman of the Intergovernmental Committee of WIPO on Genetic Resources, Traditional Knowledge, and Folklore (2014). Mr. Jailani is an avid reader of philosophy and politics and an enthusiastic black-and-white photographer. His life philosophy is “Nothing has any foundation; things should be approached from a particular perspective and particular end.”

Concert: Buffalo Gamelan Club - Sari Raras Irama: March 12

Please join us for a concert by the Buffalo Gamelan Club with Sari Raras Irama on Tuesday, March 12, from  5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in Ciminelli Recital Hall. This event is part of the eighth annual Southeast Asia Week celebration March 11–14 and is free and open to the public.

This exciting evening concert will feature music performed by the Buffalo Gamelan Club and a shadow puppet show featuring Wayang puppet master Darsono Hadiraharjo and drummer Heri Purwanto. The Buffalo Gamelan Club plays traditional music from the island of Java in Indonesia, an inspiring and evocative music that fills audiences with wonder. Wayang is a form of puppet theater art found in Indonesia and other parts of Southeast Asia. The show features puppets, vocal narration, characteristic movement demonstration, and scenes to give the audience a unique experience. Puppet master Hadiraharjo is a visiting scholar and guest director of the Cornell Gamelan Ensemble at Cornell University.
