Last Day to Vote: College Senate Referendum on University Faculty Senate Proposed Action

Posted:

From the Chair of the College Senate Bylaws and Elections Committee
The SUNY University Faculty Senate (UFS) is asking faculty and staff members to approve or disapprove of amendments to the Policies of the Board of Trustees and identical sections of the UFS bylaws regarding the positions of president and vice president/secretary of the UFS.

These amendments would

  1. require that the VP/secretary resign his or her position as a senator upon election;
  2. designate that the VP/secretary remain a member of the UFS;
  3. provide that an incumbent VP/secretary be eligible for reelection to a second term;
  4. provide that an incumbent VP/secretary be eligible to run for the position of president of the UFS;
  5. clarify that if an interim president or VP/secretary were elected due to a vacancy, he or she would be eligible for two full terms if elected to fill less than half of a remaining term.

The survey can be found on the Buffalo State website. The option is to approve or disapprove of the amendments. All SUNY campuses are conducting a similar survey with their voting constituents.

The survey notification was e-mailed to all eligible voters on Tuesday, March 5. The survey closes today, March 15.

For further information about the referendum, please see V3 Ratification Process SUNY Referendum Reference. Thank you.

Chemistry-Physics 2019 Alumni Seminar Series: 'Applying Physical Inorganic Spectroscopic Techniques to Catalysis and Careers' - March 14

Posted:

Please join the Chemistry and Physics departments for the seminar "Applying Physical Inorganic Spectroscopic Techniques to Catalysis and Careers," presented by alumna Valerie Fleischauer, B.S. '12, lab engineer at the Center for Detectors of RIT, on Thursday, March 14, from 12:15 to 1:30 p.m. in Science and Mathematics Complex 173.

Physical inorganic spectroscopic techniques have long been a valuable approach for the pursuit of understanding metals in biological systems. Dr. Fleischauer's work at the University of Rochester extends the value of spectroscopies like 57Fe Mössbauer, magnetic circular dichroism, and electron paramagnetic resonance to the study of mechanisms in carbon-carbon cross-coupling with iron and N-heterocyclic carbenes. In combination with more traditional techniques like gas chromatography and density functional theory, a complete picture of organic and metal products formed during a catalytic reaction is obtained. Through this work a trend in reactive iron(II) centers was observed to carry across two different ligand systems, and a bidentate substrate coordination to iron was found to be critical to prevent formation of unwanted side products. More broadly, by understanding the details of reactive iron species during catalysis, future reactions can be more intelligently designed and tested to include the use of this low-cost, low-toxicity, and very reactive transition metal. Her extensive work with spectroscopy and instrumentation in her thesis research inspired her to seek more technical or engineering focused roles for my career. Ultimately, she accepted a position at the Rochester Institute of Technology’s Center for Detectors, where she has been designing programs to characterize advanced optical sensors and detectors.

Professional Development Workshop: 'Facilitating and Structuring Productive Committees, Meetings, and Work Groups' - March 20

Posted:

Please join us for the professional development workshop "Facilitating and Structuring Productive Committees, Meetings, and Work Groups," presented by Jonathan Hulbert, director of leadership and organizational development, and Todd Benzin, educational technology specialist, on Wednesday, March 20, from 9:00 a.m. to noon in Chase Hall 109.

Committees, meetings, and work groups can sometimes feel unproductive, inefficient, boring, or unorganized; however, those responsible for chairing, facilitating, or leading these groups can use effective facilitation skills, an actionable agenda, role clarity, structured content, and campus technology to make the work fun, productive, and meaningful. As a result of this session, faculty, staff, and administrators will be able to

  • create an agenda that leads to productive meetings and minimal disruptions;
  • implement group facilitation approaches to defuse conflict, generate innovative ideas, and make decisions supported by group consensus;
  • identify how to structure meetings, committees, and work groups to motivate action from colleagues and minimize social loafing;
  • understand what campus technology tools are available to streamline committee, meeting, and work group productivity.

Light snacks will be provided. Please register through the Workshop Registration System.
