Conversations in and out of the Disciplines: 'Speak Up! Sensorimotor Integration for Speech in Parkinson's Disease' - October 15

The fall 2021 “Conversations in and out of the Disciplines” series kicks off this Friday, October 15, when Anita Senthinathan, assistant professor of speech-language pathology, presents “Speak Up! Sensorimotor Integration for Speech in Parkinson’s Disease” at 3:00 p.m. in Ketchum Hall 320. Her talk will be followed by a brief Q&A. Masks are required. Everyone is welcome.

Please also mark your calendars for the second and third talks of the semester: Meg Knowles, associate professor of media production (Communication Department), will present “Researching Family for Documentary: Runaway, a Case Study” on Friday, October 29, at 3:00 p.m. (format TBD); and Cameron Herman, assistant professor of sociology, will present “‘In Here, I’m Away from the Trouble’: How Black Youths’ Neighborhood Experiences Inform Their Participation in Recreation Center Programs” on Friday, November 19, via Zoom (details forthcoming).

Speakers for spring 2022 are Sue Maguire (Anthropology), Gehan Senthinathan (Social and Psychological Foundations of Education), and Natalie Szymanski (College Writing Program and English).

The “Conversations” series was started over a decade ago by Ann Colley, SUNY Distinguished Professor Emerita of English, to “celebrate and draw attention to the research being done in various departments at Buffalo State College.” Over the last decade, colleagues from Anthropology, Art Conservation, Art History, Biology, Chemistry, English, History, Mathematics, Philosophy, Political Science, and Secondary Education, among others, have shared their work with the Buffalo State and Buffalo communities.

Buffalo State College is conducting an internal search seeking applications for the position of assistant director of administrative operations. The assistant director reports to the senior director of administrative operations and provides leadership and supervision across the Administrative Operations units: Central Receiving, Events Management, Mail Services, Moving Operations, Parking Services, Print and Design Center, and Property Control and Sustainable Programs. The assistant drector will contribute to the institution’s efforts to pursue innovative business practices and develop operating strategies that enhance efficiencies and lead to cost-effective administration.

The assistant director will also support and coordinate the logistics and operational needs of campus emergency response, including the successful coordination of campus COVID-19 testing, including scheduling volunteer staff; ordering and maintaining awareness of test kit inventory; ensuring that samples are delivered timely to local lab; and maintaining detailed knowledge of the portal software in order to be able to troubleshoot, manage exceptions, maintain smooth operations, and more.   

The successful candidate will be an experienced and proven administrative staff member able to provide vision, efficiency, and oversight to the varied functions within the Administrative Operations unit. Candidates should be committed to customer service, collaboration, and effective and efficient business practices. Candidates will have demonstrated ability to creatively find solutions and manage across multiple priorities and deadlines. The successful candidate will work collaboratively, skillfully, and effectively to serve Buffalo State’s mission consistent with the strategic plans of the college and the Finance and Management division.

'Be Good, Make Me Proud' - Film Screening and Panel Discussion: October 27

The Arthur O. Eve Educational Opportunity Program, in commemoration of the college's 150th anniversary, will host a film screening and panel discussion to honor and celebrate the legacy of former deputy speaker assemblymen Arthur O. Eve on Wednesday, October 27, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. in the LoRusso Alumni and Visitor Center. 

Directed by Buffalo State College assistant professors Dorothea Braemer (Communication) and Steve Peraza (History and Social Studies Education), Be Good, Make Me Proud is a heartwarming, thoughtful tribute to Arthur O. Eve, former NY State assembly member and deputy speaker, who was instrumental in pioneering the first Educational Opportunity Program, at Buffalo State College in 1967.

The event is free and open to the public, but suggested donations toward the Jaelah Yannis Jenkins EOP fund are appreciated. The Jaelah Yannis Jenkins EOP fund enhances and expands services provided to students enrolled in the Educational Opportunity Program.
