Tonight: Reception for 'Artists/Educators' Exhibition

Posted:

The Art and Design Department Exhibition Committee is pleased to announce that a special exhibition, Artists/Educators, is on view in the Czurles-Nelson Gallery in Upton Hall through Wednesday, April 6. A reception to celebrate the artists will take place today, March 24, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. in the Upton Hall lobby. All are welcome. Refreshments will be served.

Buffalo State College has been dedicated to preparing teachers for 150 years. The art education program at Buffalo State is one of the oldest in the country; the first courses in art education were offered in 1871.

We are pleased to be able to exhibit the work of artists who take on the enormous task of educating our youth while still creating artwork of their own to share. These artist-educators are some of our invaluable community partners. They provide essential real-world learning opportunities to our preservice art teachers—allowing them into their schools and classrooms, acting as mentors, and working with us to ensure that the torch of visual arts continues to be passed on to new generations. This exhibition allows our college community to enjoy their artwork, but it is also meant as a gesture of gratitude for all the great work they do with their own visual art students and our Buffalo State art education students.

Czurles-Nelson Gallery spring 2022 hours:

Monday: 8:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m.
Tuesday: 9:30 a.m.–1:30 p.m.
Wednesday: 8:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m.
Thursday: 9:00 a.m.–1:30 p.m.
Friday: 8:00–11:00 a.m. and noon–4:00 p.m.

The exhibit can also be viewed by appointment. Please contact Marie Bogner, Czurles-Nelson Gallery coordinator, (716) 878-4390, with questions.

Campus Compact Webinar - 'Applying Deliberative Polling: A Course for Students to Study and Enact Deliberative Democracy' - April 7

Posted:

Please join the Civic and Community Engagement Office for the webinar "Applying Deliberative Polling: A Course for Students to Study and Enact Deliberative Democracy," featuring Megha Parwani, Alice Siu, and Luke Terra from Stanford University, on Thursday, April 7, from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. This event is presented by Campus Compact as part of its National Webinar Series and is free to members of the Buffalo State College community.

This webinar will discuss how higher education institutions can build virtual and in-person deliberative democracy into student life. It will focus on Applying Deliberative Polling (COMM 138/238), a practicum course for students at Stanford. In this course, students study deliberative democracy and then design and implement their own deliberative poll, an experiment and educational event where participants are surveyed about their opinions on policy after moderated small-group deliberation.

In May 2021, the practicum cohort organized Shaping Our Future, a national deliberative poll that engaged more than 600 young people in a virtual discussion on policy topics spanning electoral reform to national service. This historic virtual experiment not only generated fascinating results among participants but also was a unique hands-on civic engagement opportunity for young people across the country.

Please register online for this final webinar in the National Webinar Series this 2021–2022 season.

SUNY Online Teaching Webinar: OSCQR 4.0 - March 24

Posted:

SUNY Online Teaching will offer a webinar to highlight the latest version of the OSCQR 4.0 rubric on Thursday, March 24, at noon. The non-evaluative OSCQR rubric can be used formatively to help guide, inform, and influence the design of online courses.

Buffalo State College and other SUNY campuses use the rubric, which has been adopted by the Online Learning Consortium. Instructional Design and Distance Learning uses the OSCQR rubric to support online and hybrid course design and development during the course design review process. Buffalo State's Online Oversight and Readiness Committee has updated OSCQR standards to meet the needs of Buffalo State.

The webinar will include updates to ensure that regular and substantive interaction (RSI) is clearly visible, articulated, and highlighted in specific standards and related support materials.

Please register for this and other upcoming free webinars on the SUNY Online Teaching website.
