Biology-GLC Seminar - 'Exercise and Cancer: Epidemiological Evidence and Public Health Message' - October 24

Posted:

Please join the Biology Department and the Great Lakes Center for the seminar "Exercise and Cancer: Epidemiological Evidence and Public Health Message," presented by Rikki Cannioto, a cancer epidemiologist with Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Institute, on Monday, October 24, at 3:00 p.m. in Bulger Communication Center 214.

Dr. Cannioto investigates the associations of modifiable lifestyle factors with cancer etiology and prognosis. Before pursuing a research career in cancer epidemiology, she had a 15-year career in exercise science. Her research focuses on understanding the roles of recreational physical activity, exercise, and body composition in cancer survival and in identifying immune-related factors mediating these associations.

Abstract
This talk will provide a brief overview of the epidemiological evidence linking exercise and physical activity with decreased cancer risk and mortality and the potential biological mechanisms underlying these associations. Research aimed at addressing the longstanding question of whether physical activity improves cancer outcomes primarily through decreased adiposity will be discussed. We will close with a discussion of the current physical activity guidelines as they pertain to cancer patients and survivors.

A coffee and cookie reception begins at 2:30 p.m. in the seminar room. Please feel free to join us for a cup!
