Horizon Therapy Dog Workshop with WNY Heroes: Today

Posted:

Weigel Health Promotion and the Buffalo State Veteran and Military Services Office will host a therapy dog workshop through Horizon Health Services with special guest WNY Heroes today, November 9, at 1:30 p.m. in Bacon Hall 117.

Come and learn about the different types of service animals, finding an animal that is appropriate for you, ADA laws, training and certification, and more. A service dog will be present.

Therapy dogs are trained to provide affection and comfort to patients. They fulfill an emotional void that is often drained by addiction or mental health disorders. Research shows that interaction with therapy dogs increases the release of bonding and happiness hormones and decreases stress.

Therapy dogs can be found in many breeds and sizes; however, golden retrievers are often used because of their calm demeanor and patient disposition. Horizon’s therapy dogs are golden retrievers bred by Colleen Babcock, workshop facilitator and employee of Horizon Health Services. These dogs visit many different outpatient clinics, including Horizon Village Campus and Terrace House. Other volunteers and programs bring their furry friends to places such as the airport, hospitals, schools, and other facilities that you may or may not think could benefit from this service.

Horizon Village and their outpatient clinics have invested in two therapy dogs who “work” in the rehab facility. Horizon’s adoption of a therapy dog program continues to improve and enhance practices, maintaining Horizon’s high-quality treatment and recovery programs.

This is a great opportunity for extra credit for all students, as this service may help them in their personal, professional, or educational life.

Watch a video with Colleen Babcock and Chris Kreiger, president and CEO of WNY Heroes during one of our workshops on campus.

Restoration and Resolve: Guided Yoga Nidra Meditation - October 27

Posted:

Please join us for "Restoration and Resolve: Guided Yoga Nidra Meditation," facilitated by Melissa Meehan, web administration director, on Thursday, October 27, from 12:30 to 1:00 p.m. via Microsoft Teams.

Yoga nidra, or yogic sleep, is a practice that invites us into the state between wakefulness and sleep. This powerful meditation technique draws on the yogic limb pratyahara (withdrawal of senses) and can be surprisingly helpful for reducing stress and mitigating feelings of depletion. Also, yoga nidra's use of the sankalpa, or heart's intention, is an interesting exercise in uncovering what we truly yearn for in our lives. Please prepare a warm, comfortable place where you can rest in savasana during this extended guided meditation; your comfort is key.

Please register through the Workshop Registration System.

Guided Meditation: October 21

Posted:

Please join us for a guided meditation session facilitated by Raquel Schmidt, chair and associate professor of exceptional education, on Friday, October 21, from 1:00 to 1:30 p.m. via Zoom.

Meditation is something most of us do whether we call it meditation or not. A few deep breaths in a hectic day. Shutting the door to close out the outside world while we recalibrate, problem solve, and figure out the best way to move forward in any challenging situation. This session is designed to show how we can all integrate meditative practices into our day to day lives without needing a soft cushion, a quiet room, or a dark corner. Meditation is in part about giving your active brain a break so it can focus on other priorities, including being still.

Please register through the Workshop Registration System.
