Democratization, Presidentialism, and Politics: Where Do We Go from Here?

Posted:

Tuesday, March 18, 2025

Program: 12:15–1:30 p.m.

Location: Technology Building 160

Panelists:

Dr. Adamu K. Shauku, Assistant Professor and Associate Director of Ethics & Policy, Department of Government, Planning and Philosophy, and Center for Integrated Studies in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, Buffalo State University

Dr. Ikhee Cho, Assistant Professor, Department of Economics and Finance, Buffalo State University

After a history of authoritarian strongmen, South Korea implemented several democratic reforms beginning in the late 1980s and established its Sixth Republic. Despite placing significant limits on the discretionary power of its chief executive, South Korea's road has not been smooth—four former presidents have been imprisoned, two removed from office before the expiration of their terms, one died by suicide under a cloud of suspicion, and the current president has recently been arrested on charges of insurrection. Can South Korean democracy survive its presidential drama? What lessons can Americans take from these developments?

Refreshments provided.

Great Lakes Faculty Scholars Applications Now Being Accepted for the Fall Semester

Posted:

The Great Lakes Center (GLC) is seeking Great Lakes Faculty Scholars Program applicants for the fall 2025 semester. The Great Lakes Faculty Scholars Program will fund a course release for one semester to allow faculty to have the time needed to bring an external grant to fruition. Faculty interested in this program need to show evidence of some preliminary groundwork toward a grant application on any topic relevant to the Great Lakes and/or its watershed, including urban environments adjacent or connected to the Great Lakes.

We seek to bolster collaborations between faculty in any department at Buffalo State with faculty affiliated with the GLC, or to further collaborations between BSU faculty and colleagues at other institutions.  Faculty members in the program may also receive one Huppuch Tuition Scholarship, if needed, to entice a prospective graduate student to help carry out the proposed search. Huppuch Tuition Scholarships cover all costs associate with full-time, in-state graduate tuition.

The application deadline for faculty seeking a fall course release is April 1, 2025.

Great Lakes Faculty Scholars program information and application materials

The Great Lakes Center mission is to improve the quality of the environment by providing the best possible science to decision-makers concerned with the health and sustainability of Great Lakes resources.  This is accomplished, in part, through high quality research and current graduate and undergraduate education.  The Great Lakes Faculty Scholars Program has been created to advance this mission.

Sukabumi to Cikembar: Photo Exhibit Opening Program - March 19

Posted:

Sukabumi to Cikembar, a photo exhibit by Tim Sager, instructional support associate in Information Technology Services, will debut on Wednesday, March 19, with an opening program from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in Upton Hall's Margaret Eschner Bacon Gallery. A brief talk by the photographer will introduce the photos and provide some background about the region. The exhibit will remain open all week for viewing.

Sager left New York City in 2001 and spent a year living in Jakarta, working in the television and film industry. He has travelled extensively in Indonesia. At close range, these photos were taken on a route that is a daily commute for many in the region; the collection exhibits aspects of local commerce, transportation, family and youth culture, and the chaotic organization of West Java.

Special thanks for a generous donation by Susan McCartney, director of the Small Business Development Center, and family and student organizations for the arts (Visual Arts Board) for the exhibit space. Other sponsors and partners: SUNY/CUNY Southeast Asia Consortium; Global Studies Institute; Geosciences Department; Government, Planning, and Philosophy Department; Economics and Finance Department; School of Arts and Sciences; and Institutional Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion.

Department Mergers and Curriculum Synergies Taskforce Open Forums and Survey

Posted:

The Curriculum Synergies Taskforce has been charged with looking for ways to enhance and improve the university's course offerings through course sharing, faculty collaboration, and combining courses. We would like to invite the entire campus community to share their input with the taskforce. There are two ways to do so. Everyone is encouraged to participate in either or in both.

We have scheduled two open forums in which we will provide information about our process and goals and will seek feedback. The format will be the same at both forums. Please plan to attend either Tuesday, March 18, from 12:15 to 1:30 p.m. in Bulger Communication Center 214 or Wednesday, March 19, from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m. in Bulger Communication Center 422.

In addition, we invite everyone to complete a brief survey with three open-ended questions to share your thoughts on this process and your recommendations.

If you have any questions, please contact co-chairs Jill Norvilitis (norviljm@buffalostate.edu), Elisa Bergslien (bergslet@buffalostate.edu), and Carol Beckley (becklecy@buffalostate.edu).
