Office of Mental Health Wellness Groups

Posted:

The Office of Mental Health offers NYS employees an opportunity to practice various coping skills and strengthen their resilience through OMH Wellness Groups, which aligns with the vision of supporting a healthy workplace environment. The groups include deep breathing and simulation exercises to allow employees to practice rather than have group discussions. Group sessions offer a warm, inviting space that fosters relaxation virtually and provides examples of calming techniques and basic coping skills. Remember that the mind and body are one, and psychological health is just as important as physical health to your overall well-being.

The group sessions are free, confidential, anonymous, and virtual employees can call in from any phone. Group sessions include Monday Meditation, Mindful Mondays, Taking Care of Mind & Body, and Tending to Self.  Please see the attached calendar for group session details and how to join.

What Should We Expect of Civil Society in Southeast Asia?

Posted:

Monday, March 17, 2025

Program: 5:30 - 6:45 PM EST

Location: Technology Building 160

Speaker: Dr. Meredith Weiss, Professor and Director, Rockefeller College of Public Affairs & Policy, University at Albany, SUNY, and SUNY/CUNY Southeast Asia Consortium

Alongside environmental, public-health, and economic crises in recent years has been a political one, of democratic decline or autocratic consolidation across much of Southeast Asia. Increasingly, concerned actors and organizations from civil society have acted as firewalls against democratic decline or autocratization, even as fellow civil society organizations (CSOs) have exerted countervailing, anti-democratic pressure. Indeed, CSOs may be no more progressive than the state, nor fully autonomous from it, and may be debilitatingly fragmented or polarized. And yet across the region, CSOs still disrupt regimes’ would-be panoptic scrutiny and authority, by presenting alternative spaces and premises for mobilization and voice, through a range of modalities. Regardless of their ideological stance, CSOs’ political engagement represents the promise or exercise of diagonal accountability. This check interacts with vertical and horizontal dimensions and retains the potential for meaningful intervention—but need not pull in a liberal direction.

"Medicinal Plants: Biosynthesis and Ecology of Plant Natural Products"

Posted:

Please join the Biology Department and the Great Lakes Center for the seminar “Medicinal Plants: Biosynthesis and Ecology of Plant Natural Products.”, presented by Dr. Zhen Wang today at 3:00 p.m. in Bulger Communication Center 214. Attendees are welcome to arrive at 2:30 p.m. to enjoy coffee and cookies leading up to the seminar.

Research Seminar Abstract: Plants synthesize a myriad of specialized metabolites to cope with stresses and improve fitness. Some of these metabolites are widely used as medicines. Digoxin produced in foxglove plants essential for treating heart failure and atrial arrhythmia. It belongs to a family of compounds called cardenolides with diverse therapeutic applications. Cardenolides are also found in monarch butterflies which migrate from US to central Mexico each year. Despite the prominence of cardenolides in medicine and ecology, how they are synthesized in plants remains unknown. My lab has uncovered key genes responsible for cardenolide biosynthesis in foxglove plants, which paved the way for metabolic engineering to reconstitute digoxin biosynthesis in heterologous hosts.
