Jane Cushman, Mathematics

Jane Cushman, assistant professor, Mathematics, was selected as a Project NExT fellow for the 2007–2008 calendar year. Project NExT (New Experiences in Teaching) is a professional development program for new or recent Ph.D.’s in the mathematical sciences. It addresses all aspects of an academic career: improving the teaching and learning of mathematics, engaging in research and scholarship, and participating in professional activities. It also provides participants with a network of peers and mentors as they assume these responsibilities. San José, California, was the site of the first training that corresponded with Math Fest in August. The second training will be held in San Diego, California, in January 2008, corresponding with the Joint Mathematics Meetings. The final training will be in Madison, Wisconsin, corresponding with Math Fest in August 2008.

An article by Dolores Battle, senior adviser to the president for equity and campus diversity, titled “Communication Disorders in China: Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology,” written with RobertaAungst, appeared in the ASHA Leader, the journal of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, 12 (10): 26–28. Battle also delivered three presentations at the 27th World Congress of the International Association of Logopedics and Phoniatrics in Copenhagen, Denmark, August 5–9: “Hearing Aids and Hearing Services in Developing Countries: A Report on the WHO Project”; “Emerging Issues in the Education of Speech-Language Pathologists around the Globe: The Education of Speech-Language Pathologists in the USA”; and “An Overview of Speech and Hearing Services in China: The People to People Ambassador Tour.”

Nancy Weekly, head of collections and the Charles Cary Rumsey curator, Burchfield-Penney Art Center, and adjunct lecturer of museum studies, History and Social Studies Education, published her essay on Charles E. Burchfield: Ecstatic Light (New York: DC Moore Gallery, 2007). This exhibition also had favorable reviews in theNew York Times, the New York Observer, the New York Sun, the New Criterion, the Buffalo News, and ARTnews.

Weekly's article “Abstractions in Topology” was published as the cover story of Craft Arts International 70: 38–42.

Gerald Mead, Design

Work by Gerald Mead, lecturer, Design, was presented at a symposium February 12–15 at the University of California, Berkeley, titled "The Fate of the Art: The Hand-Printed Book in the 21st Century" as part of a limited-edition portfolio published by the Western New York Book Arts Collaborative.

Mead also had artwork included in the following group exhibitions: Rebooted: Life after E-Junk, at the John Michael Kohler Arts Center in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, December 3–February 11; Visual AIDS: Postcards from the Edge, at the Sikkema Jenkins & Co. gallery in New York City December 1–3; and Addressing Iraq at the University of Florida’s Reitz Gallery, in Gainesville, Florida, April 16–27.

Mead was recently appointed to the Visual Arts Academy Advisory Board for the West Seneca Central School District. He also guest curated the exhibitionExtraordinary Forms: Binational Clay at the Kenan Center in Lockport February 11–March 11.

Gormley also published her article “Packing for College: What the Student with LD Shouldn’t Bother Packing” in the journal Insights on Learning Disabilities 4 (1): 51–64.

John Thompson, Computer Information Systems

John Thompson, associate professor, Computer Information Systems, gave two presentations, “Improving Online Discussions” and “Discussions in Online Courses,” at the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) 2010 conference in Denver, June 27–30. He also participated in a panel presentation, “Writing for ISTE Publications.” Thompson is the editor of the ISTE publication Journal for Computing Teachers. The ISTE conference is the largest educational technology annual conference in the United States.

Michael I. Niman, associate professor, Communication, had his invited article “That Illegal Look” published in the July/August 2010 issue of the Humanist (vol. 70, no. 4). The article analyzes Arizona’s new immigration legislation in the context of the state's Spanish colonial history.
