Scott Johnson, First-Year and Academic Support Programs

A research paper by Cheryl Albers, associate professor, Sociology, was one of only two selected to be repeated as a closing keynote from the nearly 300 papers presented at the 2007 conference of the International Society for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL), held in Sydney, Australia, July 2–5. Albers’s paper was based on her sociological analysis of the organizational culture of Buffalo State that led to the revision of the Supplemental Directory of Policy Statements (DOPS) Policy on Scholarship Encompassing Applied Research and the Scholarship of Teaching. During the conference, Albers and Scott Johnson, assistant dean, First-Year and Academic Support Programs, led the second meeting of the CASTL Leadership group “Integrating the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning into Institutional Culture.” This international group worked on documenting successful models of using SoTL in higher education to foster communities of practice and to document and review teaching. Albers and Johnson presented policies and practices enacted at Buffalo State that recognize and reward faculty conducting SoTL.

John Thompson, Computer Information Systems

John Thompson, associate professor, Computer Information Systems, chaired the Educational Technology Conference 2007 (ETC ’07) in Buffalo on May 11. The conference-planning team consisted of Thompson’s graduate educational computing program students. More than 230 people attended the conference, which was highlighted by a keynote from Timothy Magner, director of the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Educational Technology. Thompson also assumed the editorship of JCSE Online (Journal of Computer Science Education), a publication of the International Society for Technology in Education. He also judged entries in theThinkQuest International 2007 competition, sponsored by the Oracle Education Foundation.

Deborah Silverman, assistant professor, Communication, presented a workshop, “Communication for Nonprofits,” as part of the Western New York Service Learning Coalition’s program for nonprofit organizations titled “Engaging College Students in Service at Your Organization” at Daemen College on August 17. Silverman was also a panelist on the opening service learning panel discussion.

Terry Postero, chair and professor, Interior Design, received the Lifetime Achievement in Education Award from the International Institute for Advanced Studies in Systems Research and Cybernetics at the 19th International Conference on Systems Research, Informatics, and Cybernetics in Baden-Baden, Germany, July 30–August 4. At the conference, Postero presented a paper titled “Spatial Order: Über-Waves in Interior Design” at the Symposium on Systems Research in the Arts and Humanities – II, “On Choreographies in Music, Visual & Performing Arts, and Environmental Design.”

Elaine Polvinen, professor, Technology, presented a 2007 NMC (New Media Consortium) Symposium on Creativity in Second Life breakout session, “Expeditious Fashion Basics with a Creative Twist,” and a Learning Exposition display titled “Innovative Pedagogical Techniques for Fashion Education in Second Life” (pictured) at the 2007 New Media Consortium August 13–18.

Michael MacLean, associate professor, Psychology, published his article “Differentiating between Sensation Seeking and Impulsivity through Their Mediated Relations with Alcohol Use and Problems” in the journalAddictive Behaviors 32 (10): 2046–2061. Coauthors were Buffalo State alumna Viktoriya Magid (’03 psychology) and Craig Colder, associate professor of psychology at the University at Buffalo.
