Gerald Mead, lecturer, Design, judged the regional entries for the Sister Cities International’s 2010 Young Artists Showcase on March 11 and the 2009 National Arts Program Exhibition on October 23. He also conducted collage workshops at the Carnegie Art Center on February 13 and the Albright-Knox Art Gallery on October 9, and lectured at SUNY Fredonia as part of its Visiting Artists Program on November 5. Mead received a Jurors Selection Award in CEPA Gallery’s annual Members’ Exhibition February 6–March 20.

Kristine Kaminsky, secretary 1, Instructional Resources; Susan Maguire, assistant professor, Anthropology; Meghan Pereira, instructional technology specialist, Instructional Resources; Charlotte Roehm, assistant professor, Geography and Planning; and Ramona Santa Maria, assistant professor, Computer Information Systems, won the faculty/staff team award for best time in the 13th annual Bengal 5K Run and Fun Walk on Saturday, March 20. The “Awesome Academics” team averaged 22 minutes.

Jeffrey Hirschberg, assistant professor, Communication, and director, television and film arts program, conducted a radio interview on the 2010 Oscars and his recent book, Reflections of the Shadow: Creating Memorable Heroes and Villains for Film and TV. A podcast of the interview, which aired on WHAM, Rochester’s top-rated morning news program, is available on the TFA Web site.

J. Tomás Henriques, assistant professor, Music, earned the top prize at the 2010 Guthman Musical Instrument Competition at the Georgia Tech Center for Music Technology. His double slide controller—a futuristic-looking instrument that uses hand controllers to modulate pitch and tone—suitably impressed the judges. The competition included over two dozen entries from six countries.

One of the world’s foremost experts in electric and digital music, Henriques taught at the University of Lisbon in Portugal for 13 years before joining the Music Department faculty in spring 2009. His research interests include human-computer interaction (HCI), music theory and composition, music and linguistics, and computer music.

Garrity, programmer/analyst, Computing and Technology Services, won first place in the faculty/staff category for the seventh consecutive year in the 13th annual Bengal 5K Run and Fun Walk on Saturday, March 20. Proceeds from this event benefit the Buffalo State Alumni Association’s Legacy Scholarship Fund, a scholarship awarded annually to a student who is the child or grandchild of a Buffalo State graduate.

Zhang Jie, professor, Sociology, and director, Center for China Studies, published his article “Prison Inmates’ Suicidal Ideation in China: A Study of Gender Differences and Their Impact,” coauthored with Bin Liang, Yong Zhou, and Wendy Brame, in the International Journal of Offender Therapy and Comparative Criminology (in press: OnlineFirst, September 30, 2009).

Carlos Jones, assistant professor, Theater, presented two working sessions, “Dance Appreciation: Teaching Beyond the Art” and “World Groove Technique: A Response to the 21st-Century Global Pop-Culture,” at the eighth annual Hawaii International Conference on Arts & Humanities, held in Honolulu, Hawaii, January 13–16. Jones also conducted workshops in musical theater dance for 500 high school students at the New York State Theatre Education Association’s (NYSTEA) 2010 conference in the Catskills January 8–10.

Bruce G. Bryski, associate professor, and Lori Miller,lecturer, Communication, have published “A Guide to Presentations: Ice Breakers, Energizers, and Visuals,” a training manual for Center for Development of Human Services trainers and administrators. This is their fourth publication in the series over a four-year period. The guides cover a wide array of communication skills, including public speaking, listening, group communication, and communication strategies. They have also begun their manuscript for a book titledPresenting Effectively for Every Occasion, to be published sometime next year
