This is the first in the spring 2012 "Writing Across the Curriculum" series of workshops. Michele Ninacs, director of the College Writing Program, presents "Comp Theory: The Why and How of Writing" on Tuesday, January 31, from 12:15 to 1:30 p.m. in Classroom Building C202. This workshop will be a discussion format focusing on the cognitive and sociological functions of writing, as well as articulating how these functions influence the teaching of writing and using writing to teach. The spring 2012 midterm grading window will open in Banner on Monday, February 27, at 10:00 a.m. and close on Friday, March 23, at 9:00 p.m. Please keep these dates in mind as you finalize your spring syllabi.

The midterm grading window will open in Banner at 10:00 a.m. Monday, February 27, and close at 9:00 p.m. Friday, March 23. In addition to an estimated midterm grade, faculty can note how regularly a student has attended a course by entering 0 (never attended), 1 (sporadic, unsatisfactory attendance), or 2 (consistent, satisfactory attendance) in the “Hours Attended” field.

Although all faculty members can provide midterm feedback for any of their students in Banner, the Early Intervention Program (EIP) seeks information on particular student populations. New this year, at the request of the College Senate, is the inclusion of all first-year and first-semester-transfer students in the EIP program. Faculty members with EIP students in their courses will receive a list of students requiring midterm feedback. Your comments concerning attendance and performance are deeply appreciated and quite helpful to us in our academic intervention efforts. Students will be able to view their grades in Banner after 9:00 p.m. on March 23.

In honor of Black History Month, the Student Life Office will create an exhibit to draw the campus’s attention to the professional accomplishments of Buffalo State's African American faculty and staff members. The exhibit will showcase materials that highlight the accomplishments. We are particularly interested in items that can be displayed, for example trophies, plaques, certificates, awards, publications, or video footage.

Exhibit applications are available on the Minority Student Services website. Please submit a picture as well as a résumé. Space is very limited; submissions will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.

Submitted materials will be exhibited in display cases in the lobby of E. H. Butler Library throughout the month of February. An exhibition reception will be held on Thursday, February 9, during Bengal Pause (12:15–1:30 p.m.) in the library's lobby.
