CDHS Public School Mentoring Program

The Research Foundation of SUNY and the Center for Development of Human Services College Partnership Development Office are accepting graduate and undergraduate student applications for their Public School Mentoring Program for the spring 2012 semester. Applicants must be enrolled full time at Buffalo State and have excellent written and oral communication skills as well as previous experience tutoring or working with groups of children in an educational setting. Undergraduate students must be at least second-semester sophomores and have strong skills in the areas of math, art, or English as a second language. Interested students should pick up an application as soon as possible from Bacon Hall 114, between 9:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. daily, and complete and return the application by Tuesday, January 17.

Faculty: It's Time to Apply for a Provost's Incentive Grant

The Provost’s Incentive Grants for Faculty Research, Scholarship, and Creativity are offered through the Academic Affairs Office to provide tenured and tenure-track faculty members with funds to assist with travel, purchase of materials, conference fees, and other support for scholarly, research, or creative activities.

Selection Criteria
A selection committee composed of representatives from the four schools reads and evaluates all properly completed applications. Applications are rated on the following criteria:

  1. Specific ways the applicant’s professional development will benefit from the ability to do this research or activity. Likelihood that the project will result in refereed publications, juried exhibits or invitational solo showings, or presentations at professional conferences. Likelihood that the scholarship will develop new perspectives, skills, or experiences that would contribute to subsequent professional development and scholarship (60 percent of rating).
     
  2. Potential the experience has to enhance the applicant’s teaching (20 percent).
     
  3. Potential contribution of the applicant’s project to his or her service to department, school, and/or Buffalo State College (20 percent).

Eligibility
All full-time Buffalo State College tenured and tenure-track faculty members are eligible.

Deadline
The application deadline is 4:00 p.m. Friday, February 24. Awards will be made in late March.

Second Friday at the Burchfield Penney Celebrates the Exhibition 'Weather Event'

Join the Burchfield Penney for January Second Friday on January 13 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

The January Second Friday event, inspired by the Charles E. Burchfield exhibition Weather Event, features a presentation by Kevin Williams, director of the Whitworth Ferguson Planetarium. Williams will discuss his findings on Burchfield’s works featuring stars and moons and explain the constellations in the museum’s reception area ceiling.

Weather permitting, join us for stargazing on the Louise Terrace.

Music will be provided by Honey Girl & the Horseshoe Falls, featuring tracks from the new album, Oh Lake Erie.

Honey Girl & the Horseshoe Falls is a Buffalo-based indie folk duo consisting of Lisa Forrest (vocals, guitar) and Doug Lambert (vocals, guitar, piano, bass, harmonica).

SUNY CIT 2012 Call for Proposals Closing Soon!

CIT 2012 abstract submissions end soon. The deadline to submit your abstract for the Conference on Instruction and Technology 2012 is less than two weeks away!

Abstract submissions are being accepted at all levels (introductory, intermediate, and advanced) for the following formats: presentation, panel, Birds of a Feather, hands-on demo, workshop, and poster.

The deadline for all abstract submissions is Monday, January 23. To submit your abstract, visit the CIT website and select "Submit Your Proposal." Individuals accepted to present at CIT will have an opportunity to submit a full paper to be considered for publication in the CIT edition of the Journal of Educational Technology Systems. Join us May 29–June 1 on the campus of Stony Brook University!

NYS Vision Plan Change for M/C, PEF, ALESU (PBANYS), NYSCOPBA, and SEHP Employees

Effective January 1, 2012, the New York State Vision Plan for M/C, PEF, ALESU (PBANYS), NYSCOPBA, and SEHP employees will be administered by Davis Vision. Enrollees were mailed a Davis Vision Welcome Kit, which included two ID cards, information describing vision benefits, and information on how to access the custom Davis Vision website for the NYS Vision Plan. The website allows registered users to locate an extensive network of eye care providers, review benefits and eligibility status, order replacement ID cards, and more.

2012 Mileage Rate

The Internal Revenue Service has announced that effective January 1, 2012, the standard mileage reimbursement rate will be 55.5 cents per mile. This is unchanged from the mid-year adjustment that became effective on July 1, 2011. The IRS website has more information on standard mileage rates for 2012.
