Federal Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP): Appeal of Loss of Eligibility - Academic Plan

Posted:

A student’s federal financial aid eligibility is terminated if the minimum SAP standards are not met; however, a student has a right to appeal the loss of federal financial aid eligibility if mitigating circumstances (events totally beyond the student’s control) existed.

A SAP appeal must address why the student has failed to make satisfactory progress; it must include documentation of the identified issue and explain what has changed in the student’s situation to enable the student to meet satisfactory progress at the next evaluation point.

To approve an appeal, the school must determine that the student should be able to make satisfactory progress during the next payment period (e.g., semester), or the school must develop a SAP Academic Plan to ensure that the student is able to meet overall SAP requirements by a specified point.

A student must complete the SAP Academic Plan with his or her academic adviser. If academic advisers have questions about this process, they may contact Heather Maldonado, assistant dean of University College and director of academic standards, ext. 5222.

The SAP appeal form and the SAP Academic Plan are available on the Academic Standards website. No SAP appeals will be approved without all required documentation being submitted to the Academic Standards Office before the published deadline.

Professional Development: An Open Discussion about Teaching General Education Courses

Posted:

Many faculty members find teaching general education courses to be especially challenging. Students may lack the disciplinary knowledge necessary to meaningfully engage in course content and may resist investing too much energy in a course they are hoping to “get out of the way.” While “watering down” course content is unsatisfying for all concerned, it isn’t always clear what a professor is to do. Moreover, students may appear to be uninterested in connecting or applying the course content to other disciplines (which is arguably one of the aims of general education). Come and have a light breakfast (or lunch) and explore the complexities of teaching general education courses. Facilitated by John Draeger, Lisa Hunter, and Sue McMillen. Attend any one of the four discussions.

To attend on Thursday, February 2, 8:00–9:30 a.m., register at http://bscintra.buffalostate.edu/registration/classdetails.asp?class=2729.

To attend on Friday, February 3, 9:00–10:30 a.m., register at http://bscintra.buffalostate.edu/registration/classdetails.asp?class=2730.

To attend on Wednesday, February 8, noon–1:30 p.m., register at http://bscintra.buffalostate.edu/registration/classdetails.asp?class=2731.
