The Students of Concern Care Team is available to meet with campus departments and offices. The team is a group of Buffalo State College faculty and staff members who seek to identify and provide support for students in distress who may threaten harm to themselves or others. Your help in providing notice of any students of concern is essential to keeping our campus community safe. Whenever a student’s behavior gives reason for uneasiness, the team is available to assist by investigating the situation, developing a plan for action, and following up with the student’s progress.

Information about the Students of Concern Care Team, including an online reporting form, can be found at www.buffalostate.edu/deanofstudents/x618.xml. Questions about the operation of the team should be addressed to Charles B. Kenyon, associate vice president and dean of students, ext. 4618.

If you wish to invite members of the team to meet with your department or office to discuss “red flag” warning signs, ways to report a concern, legal or FERPA issues, or how to respond when confronted by a student in distress, please contact Amy Rosen-Brand, associate director of disability services, ext. 4500.

Professional Development: Leadership and FourSight

Posted:

When faced with a challenge, we can flee, freeze, or fight. These strategies provide temporary relief from perplexing situations; a more productive response is to use one’s foresight, which can be enhanced through an understanding of one's FourSight. FourSight is a research-based assessment tool developed by Gerard Puccio, chair of the Creative Studies Department at Buffalo State. This profile reveals how people approach problems; since one of the main responsibilities of leadership is to resolve complex problems, this tool has been used to help leaders work more effectively with teams and co-workers to generate breakthrough ideas to difficult situations. Leaders across campus are invited to participate in a lively discussion with Puccio and deepen their knowledge and skills to put FourSight (foresight) to work in the workplace. Attendees are encouraged to bring FourSight results for a better understanding of the profile. Refreshments provided.

Political Skills in the Workplace

There are many different perspectives about the role of politics in organizations. Some people think politics is a necessary evil in organizations. Others believe organizational politics hinders them from promotions, pay raises, and other benefits. Still others think politics is a natural, normal, occurrence in the workplace. What skill sets are needed? Can this knowledge assist with navigating the political environment? Are we political by nature? Will your awareness and knowledge empower you to communicate with confidence in the workplace? Get more information on Wednesday, March 14, from noon to 2:00 p.m. in the Professional Development Center, E. H. Butler Library 181B.

QPR Training Session (Question, Persuade, Refer)

Posted:

Buffalo State was recently selected to receive a three-year federal grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) on campus suicide prevention. This initiative, “Buffalo State Cares,” plans to enhance both on- and off-campus outreach to create a social climate that encourages detection and referrals and results in increased help-seeking behavior by students who are at risk for suicide.

Faculty and staff members are invited to this QPR training session for non-mental-health professionals on Wednesday, February 15, at noon in the Professional Development Center (E. H. Butler Library 181B). The focus will be on building awareness of warning signs of depression and suicide. It will also provide skills for identifying and intervening with an individual in crisis by getting the person professional help.

This initiative is aligned with the campus’s commitment to promote a more civil and caring environment for students on and off campus. Academic advisers are encouraged to attend.

R.S.V.P. at http://bscintra.buffalostate.edu/registration/classdetails.asp?class=2714 by Monday, February 13. Light refreshments will be served.

If departments or campus organizations would like to schedule a QPR workshop, please call Latise Hairston, Buffalo State outreach worker, at ext. 4847.
