Professional Development: Talking with Students about Sexual Harassment

Posted:

Sexual harassment is an important topic for students to understand so that they are able to recognize and handle harassment experiences in work or educational settings, as well as avoid engaging in harassing behavior themselves; however, instructors and professional staff may avoid discussions about sexual harassment for a variety of reasons, including lack of knowledge and concerns about handling student disclosures. Join us for a discussion led by Jenn Hunt (women and gender studies minor), Scott Johnson (Equity and Campus Diversity Office), and Liz McGough (Violence Intervention and Victim Advocacy Office) about strategies for talking with students about sexual harassment. Copies of resources that can be shared with students will be provided. This is part of the Final Fridays: Discussions about Gender and Sexuality in Teaching, Research, and Service discussion series. A light lunch will be provided.

Campbell Student Union: Third Floor and Main Lobby Construction to Begin

Posted:

After months of planning, design, and public presentations, the work in the Campbell Student Union will be starting. Some of the first changes you will see are a temporary entrance and exit for residence dining and a partition isolating the center stair core and ramps in the main lobby. These features will enable the contractors to begin the first phase of the project.

Following the demolition of the center stair core and ramps, construction of the new dining mezzanine and new stairs to the lower lobby and third floor will begin. Coincidental to the onset of the phased main lobby work will be the starting of the third-floor work, which is the centerpiece of the rehabilitation project. The third floor will be closed at the beginning of spring break.

Look for follow-up postings from the Facilities Planning Department, which will update the Buffalo State College community on the exciting progress behind the construction barriers.

New! Announcing the AFP Fellowship Program

Posted:

The Academic Affairs Office and the Anne Frank Project are proud to announce the AFP Fellowship Program.  Individual incentives of $500 will be awarded to 10 Buffalo State faculty members who show evidence of connecting the themes and content of the Anne Frank Project’s annual conference, AFP 2012: Embracing Responsibility, into one course they will teach during the 2012–2013 academic year. More than 5,000 students, faculty, staff, and community members have participated in Buffalo State’s annual diversity, creativity, and tolerance conference. Join the AFP family by directly connecting the AFP 2012 conference content to your courses and students by developing ideas throughout your future curriculum. The Anne Frank Project is an ideal classroom common experience for important topics like social justice, conflict resolution, hate crimes, bullying, reconciliation, forgiveness, and the moral dilemmas facing crimes against humanity.

Applications are due Friday, March 23. For complete AFP Fellowship details and applications, visit www.theannefrankproject.com/afp2012-fellowship-program.html or contact AFP director Drew Kahn.
