Kim Chinquee, associate professor of English, was recently elected chair of the Association of Writers and Writing Programs Northeast Regional Council, and will represent SUNY Buffalo State College and other programs in the AWP Northeast Council (member programs in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, Vermont, Labrador, New Brunswick, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, Quebec, and Europe).

Gerald Mead, lecturer in the Art and Design Department, has been appointed to the Niagara University Board of Advisors, a national board that acts in an advisory capacity to the board of trustees and the president of the university. The board of advisors provides strategic counsel to aid the university in fulfilling its vision while identifying with its historical Vincentian mission and Catholic charter. Mr Mead's artwork was on view at SLOW Galerie in Paris (June 28–29) and at The Other Art Fair, presented by Saatchi Art in London (July 4–7), as part of the Tiny Sketchbook Project organized by the Brooklyn Art Library. He was also commissioned to write an essay on the work of painter and performance artist Xiao Yang for the University at Buffalo’s Department of Art 2019 MFA Catalog.

Smith, assistant professor of paper conservation, both of the Garman Art Conservation Department, published their article, "Documentation of Salted Paper Prints with a Modified Digital Camera," in the Journal of the American Institute for Conservation (October 3, 2019).

Mark Norris, web services associate director, Marketing and Communications Office, was featured in Cruel to Be Kind: The Life and Music of Nick Lowe, by Will Birch (Da Capo Press, 2019). The newly published biography included excerpts of an interview Norris conducted with Lowe for Buffalo Spree in 2012.

Carol Townsend, Associate Professor, Art and Design

Carol Townsend, associate professor of art and design, read from the manuscript of her upcoming full-length book of poetry, The Color of Shadows, at the Chautauqua Writers' Center's Authors Among Us event at the at the Chautauqua Institution on August 8.

Poet Aimee Nezhukumatathil selected Ms. Townsend as the designated workshop reader prior to her own presentation at the Writers' Center on July 30. Ms. Townsend read a poem titled "Song of the Perseids."

Ms. Townsend’s poem "Annual Visit to Evergreen Cemetery" was awarded an honorable mention in the adult category by poet Jim Daniels in the 2019 Chautauqua Literary Arts Contest.

Zhang Jie, professor of sociology and director of the Center for China Studies, published his paper "The Role of Depressive Symptoms in Suicide Attempt in Rural China" in the Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease 207 (7): 561–568. The paper's coauthors were Jiang Zhuoye, Yanzheng Liu, and Dorian A. Lamis.  Dr. Jiang Zhuoye was a visiting scholar to Buffalo State.
