Zhang Jie, professor of sociology and director of the Center for China Studies, published his paper "The Association between Psychological Strains and Life Satisfaction: Evidence from Medical Staff in China" in the Journal of Affective Disorders 260: 105–110. The paper's coauthors were Sibo Zhao, Jie Zhang, Yanzheng Liu, Haoyi Ji, and Bob Lew. Sibo Zhao and Haoyi Ji were recent visiting scholars to Buffalo State College.

The paper's coauthors were Quanlei Yu, Lin Zhang, Qiuying Zhang, Yafei Guo, Shenghua Jin, and Jianwen Chen.

Wendy Mornelli, senior manager of applied research and training, and Robin Coffey, senior training coordinator, with the Institute for Community Health Promotion/Learning, Engagement, and Development Services (ICHP/LEADS), presented at the New York Public Welfare Association Winter Conference in Albany on January 22. The presentation focused on self-care, organizational supports for self-care, and the importance of self-care, especially for human services professionals, and was based on a literature review and some limited data gathering from social service districts within New York state. LEADS partnered with Catherine Mazzotta, assistant professor of social work at Buffalo State, who served as the lead researcher and primary author of the related white paper, "Worker Self-Care as a Service Delivery Best Practice." The research, paper, and conference presentation were sponsored by the New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance.

Carol Beckley, associate professor of theater and assistant director of the honors program, has been accepted by Faculty Guild as a SUNY representative fellow in a semester-long OER (open educational resources) asynchronous online “teaching circles” program. As a Faculty Guild fellow, Dr. Beckley will spend time weekly focusing on improved pedagogy and teaching practice around OER with peers from across the SUNY network.

Joseph L. Zawicki, Associate Professor, Earth Sciences and Science Education

Joseph Zawicki, associate professor of earth sciences and science education, was named 2019 Citizen of the Year by the Erie Niagara Chapter of the New York State Society of Professional Engineers. The award recognizes Dr. Zawicki's lifetime efforts in the STEM fields, particularly his leadership as president of the executive board of WNY STEM Hub.

The Erie Niagara Chapter of NYSSPE is a professional organization of licensed engineers in several disciplines (civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, environmental, industrial). The chapter’s outreach includes working to expose primary and secondary students to the STEM fields in order to build interest in careers in science, math, and engineering. It has also been working to create student chapters that would expose college students to the engineering profession and impart the need for professional licensing.
